Virgin Media poor performance, congestion or something else?

I'm looking to help a friend out with his broadband connection but I'm not completely up on how cable internet works, as I have a FTTC connection at home.

He's been suffering with really slow speeds, I've been through TBB news and saw some news articles about the issues and also a BBC Watchdog piece about it.

I set up a BQM on his line and this is the result today:

He's on the Vivid 200 package, latest SH, and Virgin are sending an engineer out soon.

BQM looks good apart from 9am to 9.45am which at a guess is when something big was being downloaded or uploaded.

The speed test could be congestion based

I agree that looks rather good from the ping, but that is of no real help understand the low bandwidth your friend is receiving. What can be more usefull is the same test done 3 times in row (one after another) and if any them show any better results. Chances are it won't but dosn't hurt. Also do speed test VM favorite site speedtest dot net

How are you connecting to internet :-
1) VM-Router - wired ethernet cable - computer.
2) VM-Router - WIFI - computer.
3) VM-Router (modem mode) - wired ethernet cable - your own router - wired ethernet cable - computer.
4) VM-Router (modem mode) - wired ethernet cable - your own router - WIFI - computer.

Which SuperHub version is it?

PS using your own router shouldn't make any diffrance to anything, by VM always blames any problem on your own private router. It never there network!
