FTTP can't do normal POTS. Newest build HFC areas also no normal telephony - saves money on expensive MSANs, copper cabling, cabinets and indeed labour.

Uses the voice ports on the Hub. Rest of the Liberty Global family and every other cable company I'm aware of throughout the world have been doing it this way since they started.

Longer term project is to have that one Hub device terminating all connectivity. No 2-way connectivity to the TV boxes, one-way coax and using the Hub for all IPTV, no POTS telephony, VoIP via Hub. Better for overall network performance and more efficient.

Some of that history of course was down to Thatcher, whom imagined lots of UK cable firms acting as our equivalent to the US "baby bell's" and competing for telephone calls against BT. Unfortunately just as the network construction was underway, a large drop in the costs of mobile telephony happened.

I assume the latest TV services are similar to the cable modem, using DOCSIS, rather than tuning into broadcast multiplexes, and that is how faster services can be accomodated in the frequency plan?

Some channels that are hardly viewed have been moved to IPTV, all the channels have been moved to MP4. Between those they have been able to free up enough spectrum to fit 32 3.0 carriers into 750 MHz plant but those areas that are 750 are now having to be upgraded to permit 3.1 and a few more 3.0 carriers.

Upgrades also needed in some networks to allow for the 4+ 6.4 MHz upstream carriers needed to go beyond 20Mb upstream speeds. Some areas already have 6 channels while others are stuck with 3.

These upgrades themselves are physical replacement of some of the equipment in cabinets, to varying extents depending on the original build.

Fair point but is this FTTP? could it not just be cable with VOIP?

Could quite easily be cable with VoIP. From VM's point of view it doesn't really make any difference and indeed they want all the customers on VoIP sooner or later. Far more efficient than running the separate, parallel network.

I am on ordinary cable. As mentioned VM are no longer installing POTS.
