Why is my BQM so yellow...

Here is my VirginMedia M100 Broadband Ping.

I'm in Sheffield.

Even during idle times the yellow seems quite spiky...

Is this normal?

your use, and others in the area will have an effect. As will the links to the main Virgin Mieda core.

If total stability of latency is paramount then cable seems not be to the solution

Mines similar, if not more yellow, I have to restart my modem (its in modem only mode) several times a week or everything grinds to a halt.

It is a pretty normal graph for Virgin Media Fibre/HFC. This is what mine looks like which is heavily utilised connection on M100.

Interestingly, early this morning around 4 AM some general maintenance happened as the connection dropped briefly, confirmed it wasn't just me as another VM connection in the area being monitored shows the same dropped packets on the graph at the same time. Modem logs suggests an update of some description

Since this however, it seems the latency is better at least for now. The yellow spikes are typical though. Compared to FTTC and such, latency on Virgin Media will always be worse, certainly for cable/HFC anyway.

My connection looks much cleaner but I think the quality and latency depends on the infrastructure where you are. I'm on M100 in Stevenage (Hertfordshire)

mines not that bad, my son is a heavy gamer and never complains about the connection, he did when I was on BT FTTC.

Moving to FTTC soon to see if it solves the issue. Shame I'll trade 200Mbit for 48Mbit if I'm lucky.
