Business - sudden drop to ~5mb down on VOOM 500

[link to this post]

Our VMB connection has suddenly dropped to ~5mb today with all the usual stuff not making any difference. A live chat with tech support says they have detected a network problem affecting my connection only and will require an engineer visit. Any ideas as to what could cause such a problem?

I'm in the same boat with this, I was happily getting 500+Mbps from my Voom500 and then from tea time yesterday it dropped to around 350mpbs, I'm using TBB connection monitor and that shows from around 22:00 last night I started to get packet lost, and them bam from tea time today I noticed I was down to 5mpbs download, ping is fine and uploads are fine to, I rang tech support to be told someone would visit site to have a look, I questioned what's the point seems like a wasted visit, however they insisted someone needs to come out, so I have someone coming tomorrow, I live on the Wirral, and last time I and this issue, they'd mucked up the routing only on the business side, because they moved the head of the network from Birkenhead to Bromborough, when the engineer turned up he couldn't do anything but report it upwards, so suspect the same will happen in the morning.

interestingly what I have noticed is HTTP traffic seems to be screwed however if I download a game on steam I get about 50mbps.

If there's a network issue, your device could be syncing at a lower speed to compensate for this. The issue would need to be fixed, e.g. say faulty cable etc, before it would be capable of a faster speed. I had this in the USA on cable, they added too many people to one feed (a new building put up with several flats and just wired them into the same cable overhead behind the properties) and it caused the modem to drop to 2Mbps sync... Other factors can be water ingress etc etc. Can be so many factors, but you wont get a full speed on a faulty line. 5Mbps is better than nothing potentially.

Cable modems don't sync in the way you describe (which is DSL). They 'lock on' to the upstream and downstream channels, and are provided a configuration file by the head end.

What I suspect happened in your case with too many customers on a segment was maxing out the internet circuit at the point of connection between the cable system and the copper or fibre based backhaul. Basically - contention.

Unless the cable company set the configurations across the segment to lower bandwidths to ensure equal working connections.

The actual modem sync was reduced in my case.
TV was blocking up also.

“sync” ?? Do you mean number of bonded channels was reduced, or the modem was sent a control file that reduced throughput?

TV having issues shows congestion, assuming digital TV with external convertor box. If analogue then it sounds as if the plant is faulty.

Yes, that makes sense, change the config file the modems receive by TFTP, and align with the head end.

I’m trying to find any screenshots from the modem now as this was in 2018 with XFINITY. It was apparent in the modem for sure, will loop back if I can find anything from them.
