VM just tried to put the hard sell on

[link to this post]

I answered the door to a VM sales representative who starts going in to his speech of why I should join VM. I tell him, when he takes a breath, I'm not interested in changing services. He then starts interrogating me on who I'm with and how much I pay - all while walking forward towards me and my door i.e. hoping I'd step back and he could get in.

When I didn't move and repeated again that I wasn't interested in changing services the guy got shirty and said "no need to be rude" and walked off.

I'm not impressed, especially when he said I'd enquired 9 times. The 9 times he's talking about was when I was checking the website to see if the 1Gig service had become live in my area.

A more vulnerable person might have signed up for services they didn't need because of this guy being pushy.

Had similar last week

As soon as i saw it was it VM i said sorry i am in contract for another 12 months

And then he began... Who are you with, are they any good and how much do you pay?
I answered all of the above but when he started the sales pitch i said listen mate i am not interested. That's when he got angry and walked away. But then he started up again i was only trying to help you!. I can help you get out of your contract.

Our community group has several older people who are upset by doorstep salesmen, not necessarily Virgin although they were around a couple of years ago after they laid cable. We were advised to say politely 'No thanks' and close the door. If the salesman persists he/she commits a criminal offence.

One doesn't have to be old to detest doorstep salesmen. With the Internet, it's never been easier to discover what's available in the market and make an informed choice. Buying from a doorstep caller is excluding most of the market, so why would anyone do that?

Easy for you and I, perhaps, but not so easy for thousands of older people who regard computers as agents of Satan. If they have nobody to help them (original reason for our community group) the doorstep salesman may offer an attractive alternative to the internet or even going out at all -- many can't. That's why such people are especially vulnerable.
