Virgin has cabled my street. What's this?

[link to this post]

Virgin cabled my street a couple of days ago. Small trench down the footpath, but then there's some wires coming out of the pavement and taped to the telegraph polls. Had me wondering what it was. Any ideas?

See green wires in photos.....

Blown fibre tube

So those will be used to connect customers up then?

Sorry for the dumb questions. I know very little about this sort of thing.

I believe that the BFT duct that connects to individual properties is black in colour. So no this particular section not for direct customer connection.

There's more to be installed yet - like AFN boxes on the poles, from which your connection will come.

Thanks for the info Pheasant

Interestingly I received a leaflet through the door today from Grain Connect offering FTTP. I wonder if they've teamed up with Virgin to lay the fibre?

You could have a choice of fibre networks to choose from.

VMO2 will be completely separate though to anything Grain will construct and provision from.

Yes, seems that way. Just Openreach to go. Unless it's been a 3-way collaboration?

I've never known competing Alt-Nets to collaborate.
They all use their own fibre either in their own ducts or in Openreach's ducts.

By the looks of your images Virgin are using their own ducting to Openreach's poles.

Grain will either use Openreach's ducts and poles or their own, or a mix of both.
They will not use Virgins ducts.

Both Virgin and Grain can collaborate individually with Openreach via their PIA product but it's not a 3 way thing.

Don't be surprised if Grain dig the pavement up all over again.

Interesting. Thanks J0hn.

Would be good if everyone got together and did the work at the same time.

If I put my address in here https://www.openreach.com/fibre-broadband it says "We're starting to build our ultra-fast, ultra-reliable Full Fibre broadband in your area"

Sounds like there could be three stripes along the pavement soon smile
