Cant get Hub 5 and TP Link AX6000 working 1GB

[link to this post]

Even though both devices have a 2.5gbe port I cannot get the speed above 940mb the same speed I was getting on hub 4.

I'm told I should be getting at least another 100mb, anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

What's the LAN link speed of the machine speed testing via the AX6000?

If that's only connected at regular gigabit then there's your issue.

It should be 2.5gbe also.

Have you definitely checked?

940 Mbps (net) sounds uncannily like something is only connected at a line rate of 1 Gpbs (less the usual overheads).

I just checked and yes ur right my link speed is 1000mb/s.

I've tried changing to 2.5gbs full duplex and my cables are brand new CAT 8.

What else can I try please? I'm at a loss here.

Unless I am mistaken the only copper port on your router that supports 2.5 GbE is the WAN port and that is in use by the upstream connection to the VM Hub.

All the LAN ports are 'only' 1 GbE (see datasheet screenshot) - therefore you cannot force a 1 GbE port to operate at 2.5 GbE.

The only alternative I can suggest is to LAG (link aggregate) two of the router LAN ports into your machine (that has a dual-port 1 GbE NIC that can also be LAG'd)

No worries. The other way to skin this cat is...

1. put a small switch with 2.5Gbs (or higher) capable ports between the Archer and your PC
2. connect to this 2.5Gbps capable switch using a single cable (presuming your PC has a 2.5Gbps capable NIC).
3. connect the intermediate switch with 2 x 1 Gbps connections (using LAG at both ends) to the Archer 2 x LAN ports

But plonking dual NIC (with LAG capability) in your PC will no doubt be the cheaper/easier way to go.

No with Windows it needs to be a genuine Intel NIC (like an I350-T2V2) such that you can use Intel’s proper drivers and ProSET tools to create the teaming across the ports as Windows doesn’t support native link aggregation teaming at the OS level any more it needs to be done at the NIC driver level.

What OS are you running? W11 appears to be problematic.

Have a good search on Windows Intel NIC teaming support for background info.

I think you may have to go down either

a) the 2.5/5/10G intermediate switch route, and run multiple 1G links in LAG to the router - as described in the post above.

b) replace your router with one that has 2.5/5/10G LAN port(s)

Think over how much the extra 100 Mbits or so of peak throughput will cost though….

I don't mind replacing the Nic for a dual header Nic if it costs £100 or under.

The router is less than 2 year old so will keep this for a while longer, the wireless is fantastic I can get wireless internet 4 floors down in our communal front garden.

I don't mind replacing my switch for a 2.5GBE one again if its around £100 or less.

I'm still at a loss of what Nics support LAG and which don't.

Thanks again.

Lucky you.
I have the exact same kit and the max I am able to get 600Mbs.
This was with the SH4. I fought tooth and nail and managed to get a SH5 so I could connect the 2.5GB ports together, but unfortunately, I still cannot exceed 600-650Mbps.

The samknows built-in speedtest says everything is good and I can get over 1100Mbps.

Running a speedtest from the AX6000's built-in tester 2 days ago was 571 Mbps, and the current one I have just run is 603Mbps.

I'm not complaining, everything works, but I would love to see a speedtest up in the 900's. I was starting to think it was the TP-Link AX6000.

The AX6000 port is configured as 2.5Gbps Full Duplex, and i assume the SH5 also is configured the same due to it being in modem mode.

Surely the cheapest option for OP is to run the TP-Link as an access point and and disable modem mode/wifi on the hub 5 then direct connect desktop to the 2.5gb port on hub, and run the TP-Link off one of the other lan's on the hub....this all depends on distance though, but a longer cable will be cheaper than new nics and faffing about with aggregation.

I haven't had a single wireless AX device go over 900mb so giving that router a single 2.5gb port is pointless anyway

I recently had to do this very thing when I received the hub 5 and was quite surprised how it handled 30+ constant devices... just make sure to run all the other devices off the TP LINK and everything will be fine. The only downside to this I noticed was my ping was a little higher during gaming.

Quite possibly. I’m driving slightly blind on this one, I only have a Hub 3 (that’s running VM02 at M100 speeds as backup internet connection into a MikroTik CCR box).

Link aggregation typically works well on switches and other devices that support it natively (certain NAS boxes for example).

I’m actually still dubious LAG is the way to go on a Windows 10/11 box, as it relies on using a proper Intel NIC with their drivers and tools to make it work. As far as I’m aware it’s unsupported on Windows 11 and is really aimed at MS server implementations.

Even so I’m not totally convinced it will deliver what the OP wants in his configuration. Better to use a single 2.5/5/10G capable port on a windows box to get > 1 Gbps net throughput.

Happy to hear of success stories though to disprove.

Whichever it's at the mercy of how the TP-Link wants to send the packets across the LAG. We can tell our Mikrotiks to spray and pray with alternating frames between each link via balance rr however TP-Link may just hash headers so a single flow or even all flows between a server and that LAN IP use one of the two links. Balance rr is a non-standard LAG method so no idea if the TP Link would support it or something similar.
