hub5 hourly packet delays or loss

[link to this post]

Hello:

I have 1G service with VM using a new Hub5. I was using it in modem mode with another router but recently had reason to just use the built-in router, the normal way one might say! Now I get packet delays and/or loss in a nearly hourly pattern. See BQM snapshot with separate router toward the left and then after the change.

My Broadband Ping

... and it has continued like that continuously since!

I also see this effect when pinging that location from another location (using 2sec ping interval):

64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=725 ttl=54 time=20.6 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=726 ttl=54 time=28.8 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=727 ttl=54 time=21.8 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=728 ttl=54 time=7958 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=729 ttl=54 time=5946 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=730 ttl=54 time=3953 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=732 ttl=54 time=1069 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=733 ttl=54 time=20.5 ms
64 bytes from x.y.z.p: icmp_seq=734 ttl=54 time=20.2 ms

800 packets transmitted, 798 received, 0.25% packet loss, time 1599086ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 19.158/45.511/7957.697/378.311 ms, pipe 4

Any ideas? Does this happen to everyone? Any setting to try? I don't think there is any real traffic spike causing this (unless it's a self-test the VM box itself is doing). Traffic is mostly nil at the location right now. Thanks.

As they always state on the VM help forum.

1. Have you tried a full re set, via the "pinhole " button.. hold in for a min of 60 secs and leave the Hub 5 to completely reset.

2.Can you post a full copy of all the logs .....downstream... upstream..

Hi Brunel:

Thanks for the reply. The way I put it back into router mode actually was a full pinhole reset to defaults. I don't have access to retrieve logs right now but next time I do, I'll grab some if it's still happening.

That's right, modem mode with old-ish Netgear R7000 behind it worked fine, none of that.

Only suggestion I have is to see if you have anything running hourly, I think if this was a thing simply from running router mode, it would be reported on the VM forums by now.

Maybe post your configuration for the hub5, settings changed from defaults.

VM hubs have a Samknows test built in to them that may run hourly. I suspect yours has it activated. If you want it switched off ask them about it.

... I was thinking maybe something like that. Saturating the upload for a few seconds would cause the huge latency on those few pings (without proper configuration of the router anyway). Thanks.
