New T&C I've not seen before....

[link to this post]

Virgin Media estimate that at peak times the download speed to your Virgin Media router will range between 1073 and 1138 Mbps and your upload speed will range between 50 and 104 Mbps. However, the actual speed you experience will vary and may be lower than your estimate. This may be due to a number of factors including your use of WiFi, your equipment, your internal wiring, peak time congestion and the number of subscribers accessing a particular website.

For more information on estimated speeds, how speeds may be affected by policies such as traffic management and fair usage, our commitment to Ofcom’s Broadband Speeds Code of Practice and what to do if you experience speed problems, check out virginmedia.com/ourspeeds. The minimum download speed to your Virgin Media router should not fall below 565 Mbps.

I've never seen this information before, so they now traffic shape again and they say 50-100 for upload.

the 50-100 is explained by that they havent completed the 100mbit upload nationally yet, some areas still are on 50mbit upload.

Dont know about the traffic management stuff, but ofcom and the ASA were not kind about it when unlimited usage packages were traffic managed before.

I think its a vague paragraph allowing for traffic management, such as when they have a critical failure and need to slow an area down to keep some sort of service. I don't read it as traffic management as they had before.

For one simple reason, a lot of the country now has an alternative to VM for broadband, so they now have competition and if they mess with people's connections, customers do tend to jump ship.

Why is it traffic management and not simply congestion?

I’d love a guaranteed 1:1 contention but I’m not paying for that as I’m cheap smile

Don't think it really means much of anything other than them covering their bases. Doesn't on its own allow them to carry out traffic management, however if Ofcom get real and allow it they're all set to pad out the details and crack on.

Maybe Ofcom have looked at how services are sold here, noticed that literally no-one does it this way and are going to take their foot off providers' throats and allow them to innovate more rather than having to ensure they keep sending the cash to Samknows to provide evidence for the ridiculous speed rules.

In the UK you can call FTTC fibre optic broadband but God help you if you advertise a 1 Gbit service as 1 Gbit rather than 910 Mbit or whatever.
