New customer

I'd been with TalkTalk for the past 10 years, it's no longer competitive and they wanted £35 a month to renew my 65Mb [could only get 50Mb maximum stable speed] FTTC connection. So it seemed a no-brainer to finally go to pastures new again.

Vodafone doing the £24 a month including migrating my landline phone and getting triple the speed, plus a £150 voucher was hard to resist. So here I am since Thursday the 22nd, it's been great so far. Consistent 150Mb speed and good WiFi signal where I need it. I'll probably upgrade to 500Mb, but don't really care as I only do a few biggish downloads every 3 weeks or so that will take no longer than 30 minutes.

How are you finding it all?

On the whole the provision has been OK, but if things go wrong the customer service can be iffy, particularly if tech support is needed.

When we moved to fttp somebody forgot to do a router update to enable digital voice. The CS Agent insisted the phone wasn't working because I was using an RJ11-RJ11 cord rather than an BT (BS6312) - RJ11 adaptor, despite me telling her that the phone LED wasn't lit. I had to wait for them to send an adaptor and it still not work before getting somebody who new what they were talking about to resolve the problem.

On another occasion we had issues with wi-fi which, I think, were caused by a router firmware update. They said it would sort itself out but it went on for weeks. I think it was another update that fixed it.

Separately the small museum I am chair for had a mobile broadband hub in a rented building. It took a chat of 1h 20m to terminate the contract when the lease ended, then it was only at the end of the conservation I was told it would terminate in exactly 30 days; I couldn't give longer notice.

Their bereavement team is a completely different story. We had moved my wife's elderly, all but blind, aunt from a BT phone only to Vodafone FTTC but added it to our account. Unfortunately she died within a few weeks. I expected an argument over termination as to Vodafone, I was the customer, but it took a 10 minute phone call and me emailing a scan of the death certificate to terminate it; They refunded the unused portion of that month's payment and didn't want the router back.

It would seem you have been moved from FTTC, to FTTP. We have FTTP at two different addresses from both TalkTalk, and Vodafone, both are 150/30 and both give near enough identical speeds as should be expected of FTTP. I have coupled up an old TalkTalk router as a WAP at the Vodafone supplied house, as it gives better WiFi than the supplied Vodafone router.

That's right, from FTTC to FTTP via a new fibre line from the telephone pole next door. I'm getting openreach to remove the redundant copper line. I'm quite happy with the supplied power hub, solid 150/30 on WiFi for where I need it anyway so far.
