Landline number for free?

[link to this post]

When I signed up with Voiptalk an age ago, I did so because they gave me a London landline number free of charge! Since then i've spent over 130 with them.

Anyway, I've just bought friend a speedtouch 716wl and wanted to get him up and running with a voip account and telephone - but voiptalk and the rest don't seem to offer a free landline number. Is there anyone out there who still offers one free?

Cheers.

Slight risk with sipgate as they do say "We reserve the right to charge in the future", but the risk is small IMHO.

voipfone.co.uk will give you a free 0560 XXXXXX number, though most people don't know what 0560 numbers are.

Bear in mind that, depending on your hardware setup, you don't need to use the same provider for incoming and outgoing. Right now I use a free sipgate incoming, and voipcheap.com for outgoing. (You can set up voipcheap to send your sipgate number as CLI).

Yes, we have several sipgate incoming numbers that have worked well routed through a Fritzbox 7050 for the last 8 months - but now we are having problems with all the numbers intermittently failing to work. It began last week - and on Sunday I was unable to phone home at all. For the caller the line just rings then cuts off, on the incoming side you answer and hear odd noises. However, the point to note is that at present Sipgate seem to be claiming the problem is nothing to do with them - despite the fact that when it occurs all the sipgate numbers stop working but a voiptalk.co.uk and a voipcheap.com incoming number are both fine.

So Sipgate may be free - but I'm not sure how much help they are if something goes wrong.

How do you get this voip.co.uk number? Their website doesn't seem to give any specific info about what they offer and seems only to be aimed at businesses. No prices, no packages, no search option to hunt for "incoming numbers" - really off-putting website.
