A friend of mine took a wifi laptop to Spain and used the hotel
free wifi for phoning home and friends locally. It saved a fortune in
mobile roaming charges.
Alas it is not always possible to have a laptop handy but there are more
and more wifi hotspots appearing all the time.
Can anyone recommend a mobile phone or other handset that will access
Voip via wifi preferably without browser authentication too? I am sure that
this is the way forward although one can't expect the established mobile
companies to agree with me!

Thanks for that suggestion. I assume that's the later version of the E61.
OTOH the ASUS Eee Mk2 portable PC looks promising as I am not likely
to be making calls while walking about or, heaven forbid, "Im on the train!!!"

Actually its a faux pas, I meant the E61 and its successor, E61I.... moment of madness, but one of the guys here uses one on the office wifi and it seems fine.

The Nokias have a proper VOIP profile manager, you just stick in some SIP details and account details and off you go.
The SPV's (well the ones I know) don't have a voip client and while there are third party ones for WMx I've yet to find one where the speech comes out of the "earhole" and always comes out of the speaker on the rear.
Not sure about yours tho, maybe this has changed.

Cheers!
There is a speaker on the rear and the speech comes out of this, not the earhole speaker if that makes more sense!

bit like the "loudspeaking" mode on my Treo.
Actually I was jesting at the "speaking out of a hole at the rear" aspect
