ATA for Tesco Internet Phone

Hi all,
I have been using tesco internet phone on my computer with a headset for a while now and everything is good.

However, I would like to be able to use a normal phone with the service. A while ago I purchased a Tesco Internet Phone adapter, where you simply plugged it into a router and then plugged a normal handset in and voila you had a dial tone.

Does anyone know of a device (ATA I think they are called), which would let me do this, anyone have experience configuring one to work with Tesco?

ATA are fairly straight forward and I would imagine that setting them up for Tesco is straight forward as well.

Careful here. I think Tesco is based on IAX rather than SIP, and not all ATA's can handle IAX.

You may want to look at other providers (at least for outbound) such as voipcheap.co.uk , and perhaps voipfone.co.uk (I use for incoming). They're a fair bit cheaper than tesco IMHO, and are SIP based.

As regards ATAs, some will be preconfigured for a particular provider, and possibly locked. Others are rather basic.

Absolutely not simple, but very good is an unlocked Linksys SPA3102 (about 42 UKP) -- just be prepared to spend a day or two reading newsgroups to get it working as you want it.

You can set "dial plans" to define which voip provider (or landline) gets used for different calls, caller id works well, and it "falls back" to the landline if voip isn't available.

Very good piece of kit, but definately targetted at the service provider. As such it's fairly complicated to configure for an end user. Still, thanks to google you'll get there ;-)

If you are in money-saving mode, voipcheap.co.uk is not particularly cheap, other Betamax services will give you free landline calls, for instance. There is a good price comparison here:

Just remember with the Betamax providers, their business model is to tease you in with a good offer and then move the goalposts.

For incoming, sipgate.co.uk are still offering free geographic numbers, though if long term security of that number is important, then choose a supplier that is a member of the ITSPA, as they guarantee number portability.

Ah I meant voipcheap.com . Big difference as you point out. .com gives "free" uk calls (~12.50 euros every 90 days). .co.uk doesn't.

And I agree - need to keep reviewing, but so far been very happy for outbound.

Tesco did sell their own adaptor, but it seems to have gone now. It was a strange blue thing. I was thinking of getting one once as I use a usb phone.

It seems that Tesco now wants people to buy their expensive Siemens Dual Phone for �55, ok you can add other hand sets to it, but it is still pricey

I've started using the Talk WiFi on my mobile handset, which is handy as can use free wi-fi when out and about to make cheap phone calls.

The tesco stuff does avoid that couple of days of fiddling to get it to work, which is a nice thing
