Gigaset N300 or Grandstream HT801

[link to this post]

In another thread I described how I could not get the Grandstream HT-812 to work with Sipgate Basic.

I have signed up with Sipgate Basic and I want it to work so I am now considering one of the above two alternative devices and I am unsure as to which one to choose.

The Gigaset N300 looks easy to setup but it seems to be just a dect base station that can connect to most makes of dect phones but really only works with Gigaset Phones so if I bought it I may need me to buy one or two gigaset phones. - (Obviously I would see how it worked with my Panasonic Phones first). - Also, I read somewhere that if the Gigaset N300 loses mains power due to a power cut it loses its setup iand it needs to be reprogramed which is to say the least sub-optimal. - With usless wind turbines power cuts and glitches are becoming all too common.

Having faffed about for days with the Grandstream HT-812 setting up a simpler Grandstream HT801 should theoretically be a doddle and I suspect that it should work well with my quad panasonic dect phones. - I don't know.

I would welcome advice as to the best one to choose or a better alternative that is in stock from Amazon.

I have never heard of this happening before and I know at least 3 people who have one and often have power outages.

Edit: you can also back the config up to a cfg file which I would recommend.

Hello Dect,

Thank you for that.

Decision made; I have ordered the Gigaset N300a which seems to be the same as the Gigaset N300 with a answering machine.

See my reply in your other thread. Basically test/check with a soft-phone client to conclude its not a problem with your firewall/router and your actual SIP login/registration with Sipgate.

I've seen that here recently** and the device is typically not at fault. So worth checking before you potentially rinse and repeat with the N300.

** A long old thread here - boiled down to the wrong password being used to register with Sipgate

Hello Pheasant,

Thank you for these very helpful suggestions which could be helpful to isolate where the issues lie.

With the Grandstream HT814 I could not get the phone to register and that seemed to be the issue.

The N300a is already on its way and it will be here early tommorow afternoon so if it does not work out of the box I will follow your helpful advice and will ensure that Sip Passthrough is disabled in the router settings.

Fido

Simple SIP registration is unlikely to be a network/firewall/rouer issue and more likely to be account related.

Issues of one-way audio, being able to dial-out but not receive calls etc - these are typically SIP ALG/firewall/port-forwaring/NAT type issues.

To just check that you can successfully register, connect and make test calls to 10000, 10005 and 10020 I would encourage you to use any of the freely available softhphone clients and ensure you have the basics correct before you tear open the box of the N300.

Good luck.

Agreed, mine keeps set up even after a long power outage. At one time, with one provoder it could take a few minutes to register.

The Gigaset N300a arrived today and it is now working.

I am not 100% sure that it is necessary but prior to setting up the N300a, I disabled both RTSP Passthrough and SIP Passthrough on my Asus Router and disabling these is probably worth doing whatever ATA Dect/Voip device you use.

Setting up the Gigaset N300a did seem quite easy as the menu was a Wimp System but it was a bit of the Hokey Cokey at times as things seemed to vary. - ie. the Sipgate Account phone registered, then it was not registered, one of my Panasonic dect phones was registered, then it was not properly linked. - I could access the device via the IP address and then it was not accessible.

I made a factory reset, (what a total pain that is on this device with no reset button) and I set it up again but the phone would not register.

About 20 minutes after I had set it up, (After having left it for a while), it started working OK and at present it is still working OK.

At present I only have one of my Panasonic Cordless phones linked to it but that phone cannot access any of its call features when it is linked to the Gigaset N300a and for that reason I am planning to buy at least one or two Gigaset Cordless Phones. - (At present I am not sure which ones).

One flaw could be the N300a system to deregister linked phones as this aparently needs to be done via the handset but most of the features on the panasonic handsets are disabled when a panasonic handset is linked to the N300a.

Many thanks to all for your assistance.

Regards,
Fido
