Caller ID in incoming calls

[link to this post]

Hi, I'm new here and to VOIP. I've just moved to full fibre from Gigaclear, who have only recently started offering a VOIP option. They appear to know as little as I do about VOIP!

Gigaclear supplied a Grandstream HT802 ATA but it gives the Caller ID for UK PSTN-originated calls in international format, starting 44. It seems it does not have a config option to reformat the Caller ID: see.

Should an ATA to be able to convert the Caller ID to national format, or should the ISP's gateway from the PSTN put national format into the VOIP?

I have BT8500 Call Guardian phones which have been configured to expect Caller ID in the format previously provided by the exchange line, UK national numbers starting with zero.

Could be scripted using Asterisk. But this would be akin to cracking a walnut with a sledgehammer!

The signalling used will have it in international format. The VOIP operator would have to change this to a national format for sending to the ATA.

The ATA or VOIP call server is already doing this for outgoing.for UK based callers (Strips 0 and replaces with +44, or strip 00 and replace with +) before trying to rote the call.. But the originating number will be forwarded as +44

The VOIP operator (may not be Gigaclear) may supply VOIP in many counties they just default to the full ETSI number string..

I have had a Gigaclear connection for 7 years and used Voipfone and Sipgate for VOIP. I have not encountered your problem. Voipfone have good customer support for resolving issues.

Looks like Call Guardian on BT8500 won’t work with BT’s own Digital Voice, so the chances of it working with a third party ATA and Gigaclear VoIP is pretty small…

I've a grandstream on sipgate and a fairly old call guardian phone that works fine. Make sure your profile is setup properly, loads of options but the obvious one is:

Caller ID Scheme: SIN 227 - BT

Can also make it strip out + and beginning digits from the ID if you're getting too many. Will probably take a bit of experimentation.

AIUI Call Guardian on BT8500 can work with BT's Digial voice if the service is changed to single call rather than allowing two calls.
See also Skie's later post. Voipfone might well know whether Call Guardian on BT8500 and a suitable ATA would work with their service.

Dunno Michael. I’ve managed to avoid ATA’s and their god horrible firmware (no really it is) for quite a few years now, being either on full IP handsets (Ciscos), DECT with VoIP (various Gigaset including multi base) or more recently just soft-phone clients (definitely the least headaches).

I had another squiz at the Grandstream fora (the user manual is hopeless) and as the OP has found you can swap the leading “+” for “00”’or drop anywhere from none to 10 leading digits completely - but technically that could leave you with an area code without a leading “0” which may or may not work. Sometimes some experimentation is needed, but even then it doesn’t always work or work reliably.
