Voip account

[link to this post]

Hi,
I'm very new to this voip magic and have a bit of a problem with my IP voip phones and analogue adapter.

I input the account details supplied by my provider (Gofibre) into the first phone and it registers and works perfectly for incoming/outgoing calls.

I then input the same account details into my second phone and this is where the problems start!

The 2nd phone then works as it should but the first phone does not ring with incoming calls, if I pick up the hand set of phone 1 when phone 2 is ringing I just get the engaged tone.

When I then setup the ATA adapter using the same account details, my analogue phone starts working as it should but both phones 1 and 2 don't ring.

All 3 phones can make outgoing calls without a problem.

Am I missing something obvious in setting up my phones or does voip only work on one IP phone?

With Voipfone only the last device to register will be called.

With Sipgate and I think A&A if two devices register they both will be called.

I use a Gigaset N300 VOIP Dect base station. All the Dect phones ring when there is an incoming call. The N300 can register with several VOIP service providers at the same time.

Provided the handset is enabled for that service ... We have two main line, plus a private number for me and that only rings on one handset (by choice).

This has been an expensive mistake! I jus assumed after reading about voip phones that you just registered your providers details on all your phones and everything just worked?

On some providers, yes. On others, they charge each SIP registration as a separate "line".

If you have sufficient motivation, you can build a server using Asterisk/FreePBX which registers to that provider, and then register your phones as extensions to the server. But only if you *really* want to learn all the ins and outs of Asterisk and SIP smile

You may be fine with multiple registrations, but trying to use the same local SIP port is probably causing NAT issues.

Here is an example document for Sipgate, you will need to see if your provider has anything similar:

I may try building a server as I have a spare computer sitting in my attic.

It’s good fun if you’ve got the time and motivation. There is an incredible amount of flexibility in Asterisk particularly and FreePBX.

It does take a little while depending on your background and skills to become proficient, but there is still a very big online community to support and help 👍

sounds like a big learning curve but If I get time soon, I'll try it.

Using something such as the FreePBX distro on a bare-metal machine or VM gives you Asterisk, a GUI and all the dependencies so you only have to set up the configuration.
