With that switch I changed router obviously, and had to confront whether to ditch landline or set up VoIP (copper analogue line switched off). The new router came with a nice RJ11 to analogue phone cable and my wife's family still like to live in the 20th century and use landlines, so I decided to have a go.
Timing was important - I gave notice to PlusNet only once I had the fibre in place and working. Then I signed up with Yay (bit of a random choice there are loads) and asked them to port my number, which automatically stopped my whole service (including broadband) with PlusNet at the end of the billing month.
I did need to configure a SIP trunk and add it to the Yay call route https://www.yay.com/account/voice/routing. HOWEVER entering SIP trunk user into the router allowed me to make external calls but callerID and incoming calls didn't ring but did generate firewall log errors. This confused me for ages and sent me in the wrong direction.
SIP trunk settings: https://www.yay.com/account/voice/sip-trunks
Inbound: Use dialled number
IP Address / Domain* <Your WAN IP or domain> - will stop working if this changes, Trooli want £60 a year for static IP so I've just set up a freeDNS and scheduled a curl script on my Mac to update the IP.
Port 5060
Transport UDP
Outbound: not needed
MISTAKE! Don't do this! Security details are not needed but I added them and used them in the Technicolor router which only allowed outgoing calls.
So the user credentials needed specific to this VoIP provider are at https://www.yay.com/account/voice/users You may also need to change CallerID here once your number is ported - Yay provide an 0330 number.
The router allows for two lines/extensions from the same SIP provider - you'll need another RJ11 cable if you want to use the second one with analogue phone.
My settings are below for reference
In the router GUI:
Telephony > Global
SIP network talk.yay.com <your provider if not yay> 5060 talk.yay.com <your provider if not yay> 5060 3600 wan UDP 180
Telephony > Phone Numbers
SIP Profile 0 <on> UserName <extension user> URI <line1> Password <extension password> DisplayName <line1> SIP Network
All other settings default. No need for SIP ALG NAT helper (via WAN services in the GUI) or any firewall settings (which I wasted loads of time messing with when I had the wrong user and a partially-working service). My wife and family would be none the wiser, it works like a charm with the handset they are used to.
I do have Zoiper configured on a Mac <with the extension SIP user> as an extra "handset" and the Yay app on my smartphone always worked because it either doesn't use SIP or hides it.
