Free forum

Can anyone please advise me on a good free forum for my website, probably will be remote as it's free...?
I was recommended to Stepwebz but it seems reluctant to work.
I think I'd probably prefer a remote one actually, as it would be loads easier, as long as it's not too intrusive on users - ads / spyware etc.
Thanks a lot.

what platform will it be running on? PHP and MySQL is the most common. you can try them out here:

http://www.opensourcecms.com/

click on 'Forums' on the left.

PHPBB is the most popular but has been known to be insecure.

if you're hosted on macoman/fuzioned as you seem to have mentioned elsewhere, you could do worse than just install SMF from fantastico within your cpanel.

Fuzioned won't hold you liable for any vulnerabilites that occur as a direct result of the automated install script either.

phpBB is in there too, but i'd recommend against it. It's full of security holes and is a hog on resources.

that way you get a free forum without any spyware or ads

Thanks very much both of you.
I don't know if I'm technically adept enough to set one up from scratch myself, that's why I was after a remote one - obviously you're taken to their website to use it, but they're apparently very easy to set up.
I'll have a look at my Macoman CP soon though, my car's just failed its MOT so the forum is on the backburner for a while.

all you would need to is specify a folder like

/forums

and a user/pw

Then go into the admin set up add boards . The permissions for boards can get complex though...

Smf is damm easy to use but hugly powerful. The mods are really easy to intergrate etc.

Forums = smf

I'm with Macoman and run PHPBB..

Never had any problems with it..
Works well and can be updated and mod'ed very easily.
