bit of a mess isn't it

we'll just get a new domain i think and host with someone else.
looking at tsohost.co.uk (UK based servers) if you know anything about them... i'm a bit bothered about these linux servers, they seem to be as insecure as winders?

give nethosted a try. the actual OS is secure as a total take over is pretty difficult to do. but there are so many ways to run smaller exploits.

If we host on Mac OSX servers are these "smaller exploits" still possible do you know?

don't know to be honest. best to ask in the mac forum

lol, i should know myself but the Linux compromises have panicked me a bit

That's true but not the point. This ISP should have done more to help even if the attack didn't originate from them.

I'd take a random guess and say someone got his password to login to the domain registry and transferred the domain to another person.

sounds likely doesn't it, someone also began using his paypal account after paying the host subscription. Whatever security measures UKHost4U has in place they're not very good. I'll think twice about hosting on Linux after this.

The *only* way they could've started using your mate's PayPal account is if they'd managed to crack your mate's passwords... The *only* way they would've managed that is if they were lame passwords or if they were stored in plain text somewhere and all his passwords were the same.

His UKHost4U password is a series of random letters/numbers. I don't know what his PayPal password looks like but someone began using it within minutes of making a payment to UKHost4U through one of their web pages.
