Sizing images for upload

[link to this post]

I want to create an image from a digital photo and then upload it for my web site.

I wish to select a head & shoulders (typical passport style) from the photo which is much larger.

My website which is hosted through BT (actually worked out cheapest for what I want) uses EasySiteWizard to author the pages.

The template requests that my image should be size 20 x 20 However, 20 x 20 pixels is too small, and 20 mm x 20 mm did not work either.

Two questions: 1) Any idea what units they are working in? and 2) What is the best/easiest way to select the actual area I want from a digital photo and then save it in the size required for this purpose. ie enlarge/reduce as necessary and adjust definition etc.

I have: Arcsoft PhotoBase 3, Arcsoft PhotoStudio 5 and of course MS Paint.

I'm not artistic

Thanks

I assume you are using the Geocities webspace supplied to new BTY customers which has its own share of problems. If you are an old BTinternet customer you may also have some space at http://www.btinternet.com/~user you could use instead, worth checking.

These server side programs like EasySiteWizard are OK to a point but you would be far better off not using them and designing your site offline with a web authoring program. If you have no experience with HTML I would recommend you try NVU (http://www.nvu.com) and then upload your site with an ftp program.

You would normally want to resize your image to say 300x200 pixels and also reduce it in size as you do not want 1Mb or greater images on websites which is very unkind to those on dialup. Aim for 20-30kb for most web quality images.

Recommended is Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com) to resize and do most things with your images. But it has no crop function, I use Gimp to do this which you can set as an external editor for Irfanview. Or your other favourite photo editor.

Good luck with the website.

Thanks for that info. I've downloaded IrfanView and it looks good.

Re my website. I purchased the basic package from BT Domains.
