Hey I just got my site up and running
http://www.thetechworld.co.uk
Can anyone suggest any tips on how to improve it?
thanks

optimise your images!
e.g. http://www.thetechworld.co.uk/templates/visualtech/images/Visualblue_05.png is 95k
a 62% jpg or 128-colour png8 would both be less than a third of the size
Also, your nav bar can't decide whether it's upper case or not - if you like upper case, stick a text-transform:uppercase in there to avoid problems with fingerfarts

Agreed. You have 250k or more in there. Try to get it down to 100k or less.

I made them uppercase to draw aattention to the chatroom and forum, as they are the important bits.

Your PC Chat Java thing caused Firefox to crash when I refused to accept the untrusted certificate.

is it ok if you accept it ?

It was untrusted so I didn't want to!

lol what do you take me for:(

Put some margin on the left hand side to make the text/menus a little more comfortable to read. 2 or 3 pix should do it (more if you want, but you need something)

It's not me you have to worry about, it's your visitors. What will they think when they get presented with a strange pop-up box that harps on about accepting something that's untrusted?
Will your target audience understand what that means?

I meant to mention that your site has a nice "fresh" look to it and, to be honest, I think that extra bit of white at the top makes it look even better!

The publisher of the Java Applet has to get his work trusted. My understanding is that such certificiation costs quite a bit which is why many don't bother. Your best bet is to have a couple of lines of text explaining that the Java request dialog is normal on a user's first visit and it is safe to click "Accept".
