Foreign Letters and Accents, HTML, ASCII Perhaps?

[link to this post]

Hi, I'm sure this must be easy, but i'm wanting to learn how to put words with Spanish and French things. Like Espanol should have a ~ above the n. Francais, should have the wee number 5 without the top hat under the c. The other thing that might m,ake this more difficult is I'd like to put these words in the alt tag of an image.

Hoping this can be done. I have a standard UK keyboard if this helps. I know there must be ASCI codes, but I found one - &#164 - for the n. It works fine in Word, but doesn't display when I put it in the alt tag.

Many thanks for any help
