Domain & Hosting info for newbie

[link to this post]

I've registered a .com & .co.uk name with Heart and have been playing around with their free 100mb web hosting (its only a very small website at present!). I want to host a Wordpress blog on my website (is that the correct terminology?) and for that need a MySQL database? So I was looking for a cheapish web hosting service. I thought maybe nethosted basic plan for £35/yr?

So how do I go about 'moving' my website from the free Heart server to nethosted if I chose their service?

What control panel does heart use.

if its cpanel, go into backup and create a back up and download it to your computer and when you move copy that back.

eXtend control panel.
For the actual moving of the site can just upload it to the new servers using Expression Web? How does the process work - do I have to tell Heart I'm changing hosts?

If your existing site is static (ie no databases, from which you've said, it looks like that is the case) assuming you have the most upto day version on your computer , simply upload to the new host.

As for telling heart internet your moving host. Go into your domain control panel and select the name server section, and change the name servers over to what your host gives you in their welcome email.

ususally in the form of

ns1.theirdomain.com
ns2.tehirdomain.com

That will tell the internet to look at the new host servers for your website. It can take from 15 minutes(seen domains reged at godaddy and the pointed to our servers to be seen in 15 minutes with a little bit of help from PN) to a couple of days for the whole of the internet to see the domain again on the new host..

Ahhhh

Is this the 'section' you mean?

Change Nameservers
This feature allows you to modify the nameservers for nicolaford.co.uk. Simply select a set of Heart Internet nameservers below or choose your own.

Please remember that name server changes take up to 72 hours to come into effect, if you specify your own name servers please ensure they are configured to provide DNS for this domain name. Changing your domains name servers to non-Heart Internet name servers will prevent features such as web forwarding and web hosting from working.

Your nameservers are currently set to:-

ns.heartinternet.co.uk.
ns2.heartinternet.co.uk.

I've currently got the .co.uk site 'forwarding' (?) to the .com site how would that be affected, is that sort of thing commonly done? What does the bit I've bolded mean?

See, total newbie! I've never bought web hosting before or even had a website! Thanks. smile

Yes that is the section.

What you will need to do with both is. set the name servers to your new host. With your new host they will ask which domain you will be using - put the .com one in. Once its all working. go into the cpanel control panel and click on park domains .. add your co.uk domain there. This will allow both he com and co.uk domains to see the same site like you have at present.

The bolded bit is explaining that that internet will no longer see what you have put on the heart servers. The web forwarding issue will not be a problem because you will be "parking the co.uk " to the space as the .com one...

Thanks. Now that I look (properly!) I see that it says the .co.uk is 'parked' with Heart.

Slightly off-topic, but how difficult is it to set up a Wordpress blog on my website? I see you have a WP site. Will I have to set up a sub-somain (whatever one of those is!), although I see nethosted has Fantastico to set up WP? I have difficulty with the terminology used not necessarily the actual doing. smile

A sub domain is everything to the left of the domain(easyest way to describe smile).

So.

www.taras.com
ftp.taras.com
mail.taras.com
blog.taras.com

The www, ftp, mail and blog are subdomains. On most hosts(and sites) they exist as a folder in the website folder on the server.

How to set up Word press, you can do this via fantascio in cpanel or again in cpanel in the site software bit ... The only downside to this is, you can only do mysite.com/blog ... you can't have it as mysite.com, the only other downside is that it may not be the latest version.

The other option would be to download word press and upload and install that way.

I would suggest you use cpanel to install and work form there and as you get the hang of then you can go from there.

Thanks for your help. I think I'll go on the NetHosted forums and ask some more stoopid questions! wink

I've never used it so have no idea how good or bad it is, but http://www.flatpress.org/home/index.php allows you to run wordpress without a (MySQL) database.
