Domain Keys for Mail ? ? ?

[link to this post]

Hi Folks,

I don't have the best Domain host in the world, but they do what we want at the price we want, so we obviously get the service that we don't really want ! ! !

However, recently we got an email from them, for all our domains, we host about 50+ and they said that we are now able to turn on "Donain Keys" for our email as spam protection.

In laymens terms, what exactly is this?

This is the wording that is used in my plesk panel........

"Use DomainKeys spam protection system to sign outgoing e-mail messages"

There is then a simple "on" or "off" radio button and this covers all the email addresses for that domain that are set up in the Plesk Panel.

Any help appreciated.
Many thanks in advance............

Regards,
Trevor

It seems that your e-mail would be digitally signed to prove that it came from someone authorised to use your domain names (similar to SPF I guess).

Cheers John,

Seems like a reasonable idea to me.......... Although I am sure there is a downside somewhere !

DomainKeys are a good idea.. however, they can go wrong and when they do, depending on how the receiving server is setup, your recipient might never see the email.

Like with SPF, if that's not setup correctly or has been broken, some server owners may choose to reject mail that fails a SPF lookup and the same can be said with Domain Keys.

On the plus side though, if your mails regularly go into spam with the likes of Hotmail and Yahoo, Domain Keys can help reduce that happening.
