'index.html' file not showing when viewing main webpage

[link to this post]

Hi Guys

Hope someone can help with this....I'm just trying to set up my first webpage smile

Basically, I've created a 'index.html' file, and placed it in the root of my 'public folders / WWW' in my control panel.

But I can not see it when I visit my webpage....unless I type in /index.html after the main domain name.

I've tried renaming the file to various different names (eg index.htm. default.htm (and .html)), but no joy frown

Hope someone can help confused

BTW, here's the message from my website:

Index of /
cgi-bin/
Apache/2.2.11 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.11 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.9 Server at www.XXXXXX.com Port 80

Is this control panel on a hosting company's system?

silly question - is the filename all lowercase characters? Windows sometimes is kind enough to make first letter uppercase - and on Windows it doesn't matter, but if your website is Linux it will

Many thanks for the reply Kenneth smile

Strange....I just got back from work, and was about to check my 'control panel' (you were right, this is on the company's hosting system).....but no need !!

Things seem to working just fine now smile

Perhaps their system just needed a little time to progate/update ??

Ahhhh, yes....that would make perfect sense (it's quite a large company, with hundreds of users).

Many thanks Kenneth smile
