Who for domain with email/web forwarding?

I'm asking as there have been no threads on this in months and times do change.

Who are we applauding for domain registration with good email/web forwarding at the moment?

Basically want to aim a new domain at my isp's email and webspace, probably switching to a more hosted solution later.

How are the cheapies for domains - any issues or alternatives:

Heart - 2.79 pa ?
ukreg - 2.95 pa ?
easily - 5.00 pa ?
daily - 2.55 pa ?
123-reg - 2.99 pa ?

Others ?

Some of those prices may be plus VAT.

Sort of need cheap but not broken at the moment.

I have used 123reg for many years and find them ok.

There was one issue I had a few years back where their dns server randomly broke but it was fixed quickly and I havent had any issues since.

You could take a look at godaddy to. I havent used them for domain registration personally, but they are quite cheap.

Been using Heart for a couple of years - both for domain registration and web hosting. Absolutely no problems with either. It's very easy to direct mail, web, or any other services to any host that you wish to.

Are these all .co.uk?

Assuming its co.uk.

Heart: not a great fan (more due one lovely person actually signing us (my hosting) for heart's newsletter).
Easily: decided to spam us and that spam email address still gets spam to this day (nearly 10 years on).
123reg: one of our clients once registered a domain .. Long time for the domain to become active and same with dns propagation
ukreg: not used
daily: good fast and cheap. Speed of setup of domain and domain pointed up to our serves within 15-45 mins same with godaddy.

Have generally found Heart reasonable and reliable. Main issue there, as with others, is they do not have a facility to 301 redirect an unhosted domain. This can be useful at times e.g. if you decide to use one live and a couple of others for targeted ads.

Whilst this might seem minor, can prove a real nuisance.

I noticed that both heart and daily mentioned a webmail facility. A useful freebie I thought. This turns out to be mainly upselling - badly so in heart's case.

According to their presales enquiries:
daily - you get one mailbox which can be associated with one email address. Everything else has to be forwarded elsewhere or you buy mailboxes. With daily £13pa would give you 15 separate POP3/IMAPs. Or £20pa for 50+5. Hosting at £23 would get you 75!

heart - YOU DON'T GET A MAILBOX. Its just a tease (or a trick?) - free webmail with no mailbox! They'll sell you a mailbox for £8.99pa. This appears to be a single one which is wacky as their hosting at £30pa+vat would give you up to 1000! for slightly more than the cost of THREE! Note they still have their free hosting which gives up to a 1000 (small) mailboxes - but no webmail on that, just POP3/IMAP.

So whereas I was leaning towards heart this hidden upsell is a bit disappointing. It makes you wonder what other bits are window dressing.

Also for the record I also uncovered that getdotted/freeola are one of the few who still charge a transfer out fee. Its only £10 per domain which you could balance out against all the freebies they claim to allow you. It may still be ok for some.

Even domains still seems to be a marketing led minefield. Presumably as they are nearly all too cheap most only really make money any from the uninformed buyer and on upselling.

It cheaper to buy web hosting and thus get get email boxes. We decided to not get involved with reselling domains simply there isn't scope for a small firm to be different to the big guys or offer something unique. But with web design and web hosting we can...

Heart's mail must have changed. You certainly used to get webmail with the free hosting (but it was 100 mail boxes, not 1000).

Its quite possible you do but the website doesn't mention it. The thing I didn't like was advertising webmail as a feature on the domain package when you don't get a single mailbox for free! And the cost of the mailbox is crazy compared to their (or anyone elses) hosting.

I may well stick to forwarding to ISP or wherever until I get a greater need for some hosting but I thought it would be nice to have a fall back to some webmail. Their site and content had seemed very clean and pleasant until I uncovered the limitation.
