Web host recommnedations

[link to this post]

Hi,

I'm currently in the process of leaving UK2.

I'm looking for an alternative to UK2, with a similar feature set (I previously bought the small business package from UK2).

I was wondering if someone could suggest a company? (Oh an not Fasthosts, as I have my domains registered with Fasthosts and I don't like hosting with the same company that the domains are registered with, as if there are any problems with their service they tend to hold you to ransom).

Key features
- Fast
- Secure
- Good customer service
- 1 gig of web space
- min 10gb of bandwidth per month
- LAMP setup, once click install would be nice.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

Hi Rich,

You mention a LAMP setup. Would you want to set this up yourself, i.e VPS style or use a control panel such as cPanel or Plesk?

Most of that seems ok .. Not sure why your requiring lamp setup .. If your lamp type setup ups for like blogs/forums etc cpanel has some built in and those who offer Fantasico delux has many more built in. The only down side is that you do get lower than the latest version installed.

Also you didn't specify windows or linux !

Note I can not recommend a host because it would constitute spamming tongue .. soooooo *whistle*

cPanel, I only mention LAMP as it's a typical setup.

I want to run some kind of managed content (at the moment I use wordpress, however wordpress doesn't seem very secure).

So the cPanel, Fantastico would be ideal.

Rich,

If I had to recommend anyone, they guys at UKWSD (ukwsd.com) are good, run good kit too.

Think they're switching to Installatron, like many others (us included).. due to the lack of updates that Fantastico seem to be pushing out these days.

Yeah the install side on whm seems to suck rather badly and the interface looks ermm bad too tongue... Cpanel has wordpress installer built in (from memory).

Not sure it had Wordpress.. but then again, I don't think we've ever allowed the cPanel provided apps as they were never updated.

Hence why we had Fantastico and then moved to Installatron.

Wordpress along with say some forums are secure as long as u check for updates .. We can on cpanel installs force updates on old versions of software that cpanel itself installed.

Wordpress is now pretty easy to update now ..

One final note is that typically any install doesn't install at the root (well at least cpanel installs ..)..

This is what we have on the cpanel side (not including fanstatico)

cPanel::Blogs::B2Evolution
cPanel::Blogs::WordPress
cPanel::Bulletin_Boards::YaBB
cPanel::Bulletin_Boards::phpBB
cPanel::Bulletin_Boards::phpBB3
cPanel::CMS::E107
cPanel::CMS::Geeklog
cPanel::CMS::Mambo
cPanel::CMS::Nucleus
cPanel::CMS::PostNuke
cPanel::CMS::Soholaunch
cPanel::CMS::Xoops
cPanel::CMS::phpWiki
cPanel::Chat::phpMyChat
cPanel::Ecommerce::AgoraCart
cPanel::Ecommerce::ClickCartPro
cPanel::Ecommerce::OSCommerce
cPanel::Gallery::Coppermine
cPanel::Guest_Books::Advanced_Guestbook
cPanel::Support::cPSupport

Cpanel managed apps on the cpAddons are updateable thru whm.

I know that.. but in the past, at least, they were often 6+ months out of date. (phpBB springs to mind one of the ones that caused the most trouble).

We've been running some sort of one-click installer for over 4-5 years, so never really needed to use cPanel's built in one-click installer.

Mat,

Thanks very much for the recommendation.

Can I ask a few more question?

Do you happen to know if they are a company that try to cram loads of people onto overloaded servers? As I really want to avoid this.

Also what's there customer support like? Can I phone them? Are they helpful?

Thanks again
Rich

I rate www.tsohost.co.uk very highly. I have been with them for about 3 years (now on the Pro package) and they are very good and very responsive (even out of hours!). So far, I can't fault them.

Hi,

They're a good company. We used to have our kit within opposite racks in Redbus smile

I don't use their support for obvious reasons so can't comment but you might be best firing them a sales email to gauge their response.

Not quite what you asked .....
..... but I now have my domains registered with Heart Internet (having given up on Fasthosts)

I now have no problems at all - and the domain transfer went very smoothly.

You could look at NetHosted. Support is excellent - replies in the community forums and tickets normally in 10-20 minutes. Forums are at http://community.nethosted.co.uk where there is a pre-sales section you can try to see support response times.
I have a dozen sites hosted with them, and am delighted with the support and function provided.

Like you I have just left UK2 the support was enough to give me more grey hairs smile

After recommendations from within the industry I have move to Wiserhosting. They are responsive and have real telephone support on a geographical number.

As always there were small problems moving my website and forum and these were all sorted out quickly and easily.
