CMS Into Existing Site

[link to this post]

I ahve a site that I'm working on, well updating actually. This for a fiend who is a small business. He's looking at modding the site himself and I see that a CMS is the way to go.

Is there a CMS that can be installed to work on an existing site, or does it all have to be redone using the CMS?

Looking forward to any and all replies

It depends mainly on what he wants to do. If you do intend to use a cms, make sure you bring as many of the 777 directories out of the public_html and into the user folder so that it is secure!

To me, the only way you'd get it to work on an existing (non-database-powered) site is to have some form of page that will load the html page in question into one or more text boxes. You may think that idea sounds daft, but this type of solution does exist out there in the real world and is at least quite load-resistant as there's no database to get in the way.. There are major security concerns to consider, however..

it'd probably be less work to just to try and replicate the existing site in a cms-powered product

If you want something really simple, www.cushycms.com might fit the bill, and requires no more than the addition of a few class statements to the HTML.

Hi

We did a mini study on the type of editor mentioned and you could also take a look at Unify which works fine, is self hosted and is a pleasure to use. Although better than the others in that sense, slight issue is no page management, this is literally a page editor.

No problem however to add a separate file manager, you will find plenty on a search and in some ways this works better. As mentioned, think security on this whole matter but there's no real issue with making the set up as secure as the site is.

As with most editors, a few suggestions if you follow the route. Make the effort to insert the editing sections on a reasonably granular basis and use the repeat areas where that might help. Above all, use full URLs in editable areas, not relative. You can still run into odd issues, such as having to revert to target="blank" if you need that facility but most of these minor points will come up from a read of the related forum.
