Moving web site from Linux to Windows

[link to this post]

For the past 2-3 years I've looked after 3 web sites all hosted with the same company.

I've regularly noticed that sites 1 & 2 respond to browser requests almost immediately whereas site 3 often takes 1-2 seconds to come back with the requested page.

The web sites are similar in methodology, similar in page sizes so I couldn't see a reason for the difference. I raised a ticket with the host and they waffled a reply.

I found today that sites 1 & 2 are hosted on Windows Server 2003, site 3 is hosted on Linux. Clearly that could be a factor so I had a look at the control panel and it has a change server option. So I chose that and chose Windows Server 2003. After 60-90 seconds it came back saying it had moved it though it might take 24 hours for DNS changes to propagate around the web.

It strikes me that a 'Change Server' option like that is amazing considering all the various changes that. I'd have thought, have to be done.

Is such a capability relatively common within the hosting community?

Given the same same hardware, connection etc, sites should load at the same speed regardless of its on windows or linux, what will affect it is load, bandwidth etc.

its not unusual, and can be done.

The web site doesn't care if it's running on Windows or Linux. It just sees the Apache server. I guess all that's needed is to move the data from one server (real or virtual) to another.

It could be possible that if your using shared server hosting, then the other 2 sites might have been on under-utilized servers while the 3rd might have been on a server that has a few heavy load sites...

As long as its the same http and sql server it doesn't matter, having the same control panel again helps. You can move user accounts between cpanel servers with ease .. for instance

I'd be surprised if many web site hosts pay for SQL server (or IIS for that matter). I expect they run Apache/MySQL/PHP whatever the OS.

Msql hosting is expensive mainly due to the cost of the sql server software liscense cost. We did look into it and bulked at the cost, and thought that market is too small to go for.

I'd wondered about server load as well, but seeing as how it was so easy to move I chose that.

Now I've moved the response time is noticeably and consistently quicker.

Going by the server IP addresses sites 1 & 2 are on one server, site 3 is on another. All running Microsoft Server 2003.

Whatever, the response is better. That'll do me.
