F2S = lose, so after new ISP (10GB cap ok!)

[link to this post]

Hi,

Well, I'm fed up with freedom2surf. The service is fine, but the lack of customer support means I just feel like I can't stay with them on principle. I had one simple query and they haven't even responded to written complaints, so they've got to go.

So I'm after a new ISP! I live in central birmingham so should be able to have a fast connection, though to be honest I'd sooner pay less and stick with 1mb. Same with caps - my usage has never been above 10GB so I'm happy to stick with that if it means I can pay less. Price wise, well at the moment I'm paying

If you want an unlimited and uncapped product why not look at one of the LLU providers, Be* is now available at your exchange.

The only thing that may go against a Max adsl or Be*s adsl2+ product e.g. is the legnth of your telephone line, which could cuase a problem if you have a long line, and certainly if you are over 5 Km from your exchange Be* would not provision you.

The reason I went with Be* they are the only LLU provider that have a three month NO STRINGS notice period, and your telephone remains with BT so you can use the cheap providers such as 18866 etc for your calls. See the link below

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06/01/be_unlimted_24meg_review/

Also for further information

http://www.beforum.co.uk/forum/default.aspx

Most migrations occur withing 8 days ... new provides can be as fast as 4 working days.

Things can go wrong of course. This is usually down to third party suppliers, although Be* never blame them- BT screw up a small percentage of the migrations, and LLU to LLU is still a cease and re-provide. The Be Box can be late arriving in a small number of cases, thanks to our friends at parcelforce.

I am very happy with my Be* connection, and have not had any big problems with Be*

support is OK and improving,[i.e. 0800 numbers in july] and Be* have promissed investment in extra bandwidth as the network grows to keep contention invisible.

all the usual questions

do you have your own modem/router?
what LLU providers on your exchange check www.samknows.com
are usenet, news servers, email (provided by the ISP) important?
what speed are you on at the moment?

pipex -> Plusnet -> Metronet (very happy untill evil plusnet takeover) -> NewNet (looking good so far)

Hi there Chris

Assuming that you are connecting to the Birmingham Central exchange then there are a few of options open to you costing less than you are paying now discounting the ISPs already mentioned.

Telewest offers an up to 2Mbps unlimited usage service, activation and a modem for

no, no and no. i do online gaming sometimes, though, so pings etc need to be good (mind you i believe this isn't such of a problem anymore, though i do miss my <10ms ping on NTL cable- when i was in portsmouth!)

> what speed are you on at the moment?

1Mb. i believe i can get more now but i never bothered to regrade as i don't really need it.

Hi there Chris

Well you could always go with Telewest who are available in your area and who have now merged with NTL with reportedly better Customer Service too!

Either way the ISPs you have been referred to are a lot cheaper than you are paying now and will suffice your usage requirements and may very well give you low ping times too.

Regards

Reality

Aye, NTL/Telewest were my first port of call when I moved up here, but unfortunately I can't get them at my post code (despite being dead center of brum). I have a feeling this may be because I'm in an apartment complex, and although I have a cable socket, it might be going through some kind of junction system, or similar.

Thanks all for the other suggestions, though, I shall have a go through of them all tonight

Chris
