[link to this post]

I have been woundering which ISP to go with. I am on aol silver at the mo and the only reason im leaving is because they refuse to upgrade me freely to 1mb from 512k. My line is good enough.

First i thought about UKOnline @

Gave Nildram a call just now and they tested my line quickly for me and they said its showing up as possibly 512k - 1mb broadband but possible 2mb.

They couldn't be certain 100% without bt engineer or somit they said.

I mean 50gb quota sounds good tho for peak but what are there times for offpeak? As most know phone calls offpeak is 6pm till 8am. But i guess thats different for internet offpeak times.

Im just really concerned tho as i would hate to move to them based on the assumption i will get 2mb or 1mb but they put me on 512k service. As i have said i supose im happy with aol 512k service im just moving ONLY for the higher speed as i would like 100k download speed instead of 50k.

Mainly for streaming movies etc and dling on p2p.

I wasn't looking for 2mb connection just 1mb. I did ask lol if they offered cheaper because of just wanting 1mb but they said no lol.

I mean i dont work so broadband is expensive for me and 20 was the big limit for me personally. If Nidram is unlimted dl as 50gb peak and whatever u like offpeak and can get 1mb -2mb and no port throttling for p2p then i supose i can stretch to 22.50 or whatever it is.

Hi there Skeeter

Having read your posts over the last 5 or so months there are a number of reasons why you will have great difficultly getting the service that you want covering your criteria at the price you are prepared to pay, and they are

1, AOL will not upgrade you from 512kbps to 1Mbps

2, Your Sunderland North Exchange ONLY enables you to get BT ADSL IPStream legacy products 512kpbs, 1Mbps or 2Mbps from VERY FEW ISPs, or more likely BT Max DSL provider

I think i can stretch to nildram dsl surf package.

Is there any pitfalls i should know about. Such as port thottling or blocked ports and is it ok for p2p with dl speed or 100k ish for 1mb conenction or if im dead lucky 2mb 200k a sec?

Also i get billed from aol in 30th of each month so when is best time to migrate to them if Nildram is mostly what im after? I heard 15 days till migrate so would me asking for mac code on 14th-15th this month be about best time to get mac code and migrate over to them or could i wait till 25th of this month and then migrate.

As i said i dont work so i want to use aol as much as i have paid this month for to get my moneys worth out of them.

Also does Nildram do adslmax if so is it for premium members or any members? If i go on adslmax can i go on fixed 2mb package if i get poor speeds? for free or do i pay 11 quid?

You may well be best served asking in the Nildram forum itself for specific answers

Hi there again Skeeter

I have no direct experience of any of the three ISPs I have mentioned so it would be difficult for me to comment on which is best.

If your wish for feedback from users of each of the ISPs then post some questions in the relevant forums below

Nildram Forum (Nildram are owned by Pipex Communications but have their own forum)

Ace Internet Forum (they are a reseller so don
