Just installed my BT phone line. Need advice!

[link to this post]

I used the Availability Checker and got this:

---
For Telephone Number xxxxxxxxxxx on Exchange WANDSWORTH

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6Mbps up to 8Mbps.

The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest.
---

Now which ISP? I am thinking about subscribing to BT itself. Good idea?

PS: I am a heavy user and need something top quality. I don't mind having to pay more for it.

I read somewhere (can't find the link now) that I am 900-1000 kilometers away from the WANDSWORTH exchange.

I'd like to know what is the best service money can buy, for my situation.

Up to 1KM is very good. Anything from 1KM to 3.5KM is good. Anything beyond 7KM is bad. Anyhing beyond 9KM is time to move house.

But don't forget it's not crow-fly distance, it's the length (and quality) of your cable (and its surroundings) that governs what speed you can get. However at that distance you should get good speeds with all options.

Better then most i'd say..i am 750 from the exchange and get about 6.5 meg, so x that by 3 and then take into account the little extra distance you are and i reckon you are good for 15+meg. This does of course depend on the quality of your phone line.

Thanks for the explanations about the distance.

I called BE, but they said I have to wait 10 days to place my order. This is because I just installed my line. Damn! I'll try another provider.

How does BE compare with BT?

In the background, isn't it the same kind of infrastructure, from BT itself? So isn't the speed the same? Or the provider can make a difference on the speed?

thanks
