A basic package at around

[link to this post]

Hi, I'm new here and am posting anonymously as my email on registration has not arrived yet.

I'm new to this broadband thing - I don't even have it yet, just dial up - and would like some advice on the best options available to me. I live in a rural part of Northern Ireland and have been told by BT and AOL that the maximum speed I can expect is only 512kps; the speed of my connection will be low as I live near the end of the line and far from the exchange.

At the moment due to not knowing very much I'm leaning towards AOL: they do a better deal in terms of cost than BT and UTV, and I've also heard bad things about Plusnet. AOL offer a year long contract at

This is the same poster - I still haven't received registration details in an email - and I'm wondering if anyone can offer me advice based on the information outlined in my first post? Does anyone have an opinion on whether AOL are a good ISP or are there better providers out there offering deals for around

AOL forum here, have a read and see what you think;

Compare up to 6 ISPs here for a wider selection:

Newnet might fit your undemanding needs, worth a look at their offerings given your price range:

I'm from Northern Ireland and i've just migrated to AOL. Speeds seem good far better than Pipex who i was with before so I would recommend them so far and also on the plus side you get a free month and wireless router!

Hi,

A couple of alternative suggestions!

If you want a fixed rate 512k package and you don't think your usage will be large, then Namesco's Home Start package gives you 2gb allowance per month for 11.95 per month. You will also have to pay a

Definitely lose the dialup and I would say you are a light user, and I would agree with NewNet tremendous customer support and very solid connection and I also enjoy Namesco NewNet also offer a genuine 1-month contract.

PlusNet are floundering are the moment and have been for a long while and as AOL have been taken over, I suspect they have a limited future in their current state - as one of the other posters said, use the compare link and you will soon sort out the men from the boys

Good luck - Blue

This is the same poster who started the thread - I really need that registration to come through.

I find the amount of choice quite bewildering but I'll certainly check out those links. An improved dial up connection is out of the question as the computer I've bought especially for broadband has no internal dial up modem. So broadband it's got to be.

As some have said I seem to be a light user, however, that's due in part to my circumstances. There's just often no point in trying to use the internet for more when you've a crappy dial up connection. With increased speed I might make far more use of the internet.

As AOL have been taken over recently is it likely that big changes are in store. I don't want to go with a reasonable ISP only to find that their performance goes rapidly down hill because of new ownership. Hmm, lots to think about.
