I'm Going Insane!!!!!!

[link to this post]

I know you have been asked this a million times but I just cant choose who to change to!!!

We have 3 laptops in the house and play xbox live (on line regularly). The kids download music but not movies or anything large.

We are currently with Virgin (17.99 package) and are getting really bad lag when playing xbox. Weekend and evening speeds are terrible!!!! Our Exchange speed says up to 2mbps (Lower Shelton Exchange SMLSN). I have the MAC Code from Virgin but every time I surf the net I change my mind who to change to. Its driving me crazy!!!! I did think what the hell go for BT they must be safe but I am put off by the 12/18 month contract.

Please point me in the right direction!!!!

Huh? If your offspring are old enough to download music, why can't you get them simply to lurk in the main forums here and come up with a shortlist for you? Why should you have to go insane at all?

In any event it's really not that difficult for anyone to get a table of the ISPs that are rated according to persons' satisfaction. Having 8250 ratings is quite a nice start:

If anything, be extra wary of anything to the right of Newnet on that table. That's the best hint you'll get from me. The current state of UK adsl is such that throttling is really killing the party.
Please keep quiet about the ISP that you choose as an ISP can literally fall within weeks if a swarm of heavy downloaders descend on it. Newnet e.g., had to radically raise its prices to 'shake its tree' recently just so that some of its bandwidth would be unchoked.

Price rises or throttling are the only options open to ISPs to cope with demand as Bt Wholesale still haven't budged on outdated prices while demand for higher bandwidth among consumers has grown exponentially. If people didn't put up with throttling then ISPs wouldn't do it - they'd just raise prices. The problem is that too many people look no further than the deceptively bargain prices for so called 'broadband' when in many case they'd be better off with narrowband - so much has their connection been throttled. And they'd save the most too. Sigh...
