In a nutshell - Which ISP delivers the lowest ping

[link to this post]

I understand that where I am I can get BT, Bull Dog or Be There Broadband. The thing is the speed beyond 2Mb isn't really much of an issue these days. What is important to me is Low latency/pings. I play computer games a lot on the internet and my current ISP Telewest can't really cope even if someone on another computer just looks at BBC news. My ping will leap from 65 to 900-1500 resulting in a "kick" for a high average ping.

As I'm moving house soon I want to switch back to ADSL. So the question is what ISP can deliver the best low latency service?

Are you talking about a shared connection,i.e. someone in the house looking at BBC? In which case the problems remain no matter which provider, to avoid this you need to implement traffic management e.g. use a router that allows you to give priority to UDP gaming traffic for example.

Software like netlimiter can help to avoid one user on a LAN taking too much of the line at any instant

as for lowest latency, your location in relation to the ISP and where the game servers you play on is important. In theory an ISP that hosts the servers you play on should be best

If you had a bigger pipe (10mbit) you wouldn't be affected as much. However, installing net limiter on the suspect PCs would also help solve it

Work: Zen 8000 Active
Play: UKFSN Unlimited ADSL 2MBiT

hmmmm after reading your post I suppose there are two parts to my issue;
--------
Firstly
--------
The computer that was being used to look at the BBC website is one of mine. On our broadband. But I don't understand why loading the page (Or the rather plane Google homepage) would affect the ping on my computer for up to a minute after. We're currently using;

Motorola Modem -> Apple Extreme Base station - > Gigabit Switch -> Computers

If I was to switch back to ADSL when I move I would use;

Netgear ADSL Router Modem -> Gigabit Switch -> Computers

Though I think the current problem probably lays with the Modem or the apple kit.

------------
Secondly
------------
I vaguely remember reading somewhere that one particular ADSL provider's network connects directly to Level 3 Communication's Backbone Infrastructure, which would offer low pings. I just can't remember who that is.

I suppose in a way I'm looking for a provider who's quality of link is a priority. And it doesn't really matter if I have 2 or 24Mb download. My local exchange is unbundled and the current ISPs I could use would be;
Be There
Bulldog
Easynet/Sky
Orange
Tiscali

Knowing my luck none of these connect to Level 3 though, LOL!
