Orange or Sky Broadband - Which is Best?

[link to this post]

Hey guys. I am currently living in Hull and am therefore restricted to one ISP: Karoo. After a lot of teething problems they are offering a semi-decent 8meg service for 25 quid a month.

I am moving to central norwich in June and will therefore be changing my ISP. I have a Sky subscription and an Orange contract at over

being a web designer might have suggested to me u knew a thing about checking out the forums, I suspect karoo is better than the 2 possibles u mentioned

both seem great for an email service with a bit of browsing, tech support via script and a free present of a balll and chain should u wish to leave within 18 months

that could be a generous comment as most monopolies don't seem to improve much. But going from something bad to something worse or questionable as they are CHEAP is not always the best course

Do you want something very cheap that sort of works or something that works well, but is not very cheap ?

Hi Jim, I'm on Sky Mid and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at what a solid service it is; I manage 7Mb at all times - tech support is nonsense but hopefully you won't need that!

As for throttling etc; I believe Base, Mid and Max have no priorities but Connect is heavily managed and not the package to go for - I get far in excess of 300k / sec btw.

As for Orange - good luck

I was with Orange.

When they were Freeserve & then Wanadoo they were reliable & trouble free. The only gripe I had was that you had to use their outgoing mail server.

When they became Orange it all went downhill. Firstly they renaged on the promise that they would maintain the connection at the highest speed my line would support (Wanadoo had emailed me a couple of months earlier to say I would be upped to 5meg from 2meg in a few months time when the exchange was enabled) When it didn't happen they had rebranded as Orange and wanted me to take a further year's contract to get what my old contract promised me!

Then email when belly up - some of their servers were being being identified (by other ISPs) as carrying high levels of spam and were blocked by the software the ISPs used. The upshot was much of my email wasn't getting through. It took well over a month before they sorted that one. The first time i contacted them to say they had a problem (in spite of it being well known on the net) they denied it and suggsted the problem was at my end!

The next time I called they still denied a problem until I asked for my MAC code when they told me they they were working to resolve the issue! I chose not to be persuaded to stay on the grounds that 4 weeks to solve an email issue was too long and that I didn't like being lied to!
Why does their service status always say "status green" (with the occasional amber for web mail). Their entire network would have to fail before they would admit anything was wrong.

Do not touch Orange!
