Be or UKonline

[link to this post]

Hello,
Out of Ukonline or Be, which one would you choose as an ISP. Im trying to sort a supplier out, for our house next year at manchester, as we are students. Theres going to be 6 of us sharing the connection so we are going to need it fast, therefore im looking at Be, or Ukonline (or any other but these are the only two i know).

M14 5PS Is the postcode we will be living at if thats any help. Were gonna need an unlimited connection since most of us will be downloading/watching videos(ahh youtube)/gaming, and we need it fairly cheap since were students so i thought something like Be would be good since it will only cost us 4 quid a month each for the internet, cheap = good!

What would you choose if you were in the same situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

thanks
jas

Seeing as there are BT price changes this May, and the current crop of takeovers and going brokes at the moment, anything said now will be totally irrelevant by next year.

If you mean next academic year, even that is September/October and everything could still have changed.

BT price changes are irrelevant, BT will only provide 8Mb until BT 21CN services arrive.

Even if BT chopped their prices in half this is students we are talking about, they are NOT going to want a service with only a few gig allowance per month, which is what you will get with most MAX based services from any ISP at cheap prices.

Also if say BT suddenly lowered prices to ridiculously low (WILL NEVER HAPPEN) amounts all the LLU providers and cable providers will do is the same and chop their prices, couple this with the fact that on LLU and cable you will have faster speeds available (atleast until BT 21CN gets here) and the whole debate about BT pricing becomes totally irrelevant with regards to the posters question IMO.

No debate about BT pricing, that was the least important bit of my post. But it is still true that prices change in May, and some isps (eg Newnet) already reflect that and others don't.

My main point holds, any discussion now of which ISP to have in September/October or even next year is a pointless exercise as several will go bust and several will merge before then. Will Ofcom find teeth about FUPs? Will ASA and/or OFT/Trading Standards act on "unlimited?

The Op is wayyyyyyyy to early asking the q.

And don't for heavens sake anyone start a debate in this thread about FUPs and Unlimited, both have been covered by literally thousands of posts recently and nothing more needs to be said. I merely mentioned them here as a factor which may or may not change by the time the OP intends to act.

Hi Jason, according to your postcode your exchange is enabled for most of the LLU networks; have you considered Sky Max? You mention cost is an issue so perhaps you could get Sky TV and the 16Mb service all thrown in!

You are quite close to the exchange so in principle you should get near top speed.

I still totally disagree BT pricing is pointless for this discussion as the Original poster is not even considering BT base max or any other BT based product.

Newnets prices and limits as well as many other BT based ISPs for what the original poster wants i quote "Theres going to be 6 of us sharing the connection so we are going to need it fast". and "Were gonna need an unlimited connection since most of us will be downloading/watching videos" is not gonna cut the mustard unless they want to pay high prices normally around

Im a very happy Be 'ing' (yes its a really bad joke). There speed has been excellent and reliable. I moved from Newnet earlier this year, due to the silly price increase. Im also in a Student house. Be there is probably the best LLU out there at the moment, but who knows whats goning to happen bt Sept.

Thanks alot for the posts :]. Ye im probably going to leave it a little while, but we can move into the house in a couple of months i thought id do a bit of early investigation, because we need to get everything sorted soon before we move in since i can always say, oh connect us on such a date when i fill in a form/ring the company up

Again thanks. Im gonna investigate into sky, but think will probably go with Be!
