Tiscali Max

Anyone know what download speed I could reasonably expect from TiscaliMax up to 8Mb service. My Netgear router always seems to be connected at 3660 but every time I carry out speed checks e.g on the thinkbroadband speed test tool the best I get is just short of 1MB. At some times of the day it drops to less than half that !
I know my location is approximately 3 miles from the telephone exchange which is a problem but am I right in thinking that if the connection is estalished at 3660 then I should get something better than 1Mb
I am reluctant to go to the bother of changing ISPs if I couldn't be sure it would be an improvement.
Any ideas ?

if you are connected at 3600 you will be on the 3mb ip profile. Expected speeds would be between 2 and 3mb.

So, 1mb is in fact unreasonable and can only be down to Tiscali as opposed to my proximity to the telephone exchange.
How can I determine whether any other ISP would perform better

depends on what if any other ISPs throttle as much as Tiscali

Have you run the BT speedtester here to check your IP Profile?

Yes, I've just completed the BT test you suggest and the results are as follows:
IP Profile 3000kbps
DSL connection rate 448kbps upstream and 3456kbps downstream
Actual IP througput during test was 929kbps

So this seems to support the other speed tests I've done - the downstream speed never gets above 1mb regardless of what time of day the tests are done.

sounds like they have you on some sort of 1M profile, either that or their service is just overloaded.
