Which 'old hat' names are you likely to accept for your customer?

Any company that's been around for at least a couple of years.
I can't take risks - it's a client - you know... If it means spending an extra pound or two just to have a company that the client may even have heard of, then that would be cool.

Old Hat, meaning: Old timer, or traditionally accepted as being a firmhold in the ADSL market, etc etc

Thanks for the response.

Entanet has been an ISP since 1996 and had its first BT Central installed in 2000 - the second ISP in the country to get one, I think. If that isn't old hat enough you'd better call BT since they got one slightly before us

...

I'm not going to recommend an Entanet company, it's a personal thing.
Thanks all the same.

Edit, forgot to add this .......
Looks like you will need to contact an ISP for the special needs,so try NewNet and IDnet both recommended on this forum many times.

Mind if I ask why you need port 25 open? Is it for 3rd-party SMTP?

Yes, Absolutely.
And it'll remain port 25 - unchangeable until the day I am forced to get my own server, and I really can't be bothered with that...

Thanks for the responses so far everyone.

Its starting to look like newnet, but they don't wang in a wireless router for free. Well, for

There are not many 'old hat or not' that will include a free router when the contract is around 10-15 quid per month.
Those that do probably dont actually give it away 'free' until you have been with them 12 months or more (in other words they might give you the equipment but if you cancel inside of 12 months you have to give it back).
My advice would be concentrate more on the specifics of the service and price rather then the branded corporate name tag the ISP may have.
If 1gig a month is all you need there are plenty of choices and i personally for 1gig a month would aim at around the 15 quid per month mark and no more.
Use the compare feature on this site and look for a company that scores high on customer satisfaction, draw up a short list and ring them to see which block port 25 and which will freely unblock it, by the time you have done that i imagine your list will be very short and the choice will be pretty easy.
As for the router, id advise the customer to buy their own equipment, if they get a brand you are familiar with you can assist them if they need help with setup etc and they will probably appreciate that more then having to phone the ISP for any help with the equipment.

I use Purple Cloud for email in both directions, and have no trouble with Port 25 on my existing ISP, who I am leaving on Friday for Newnet. I don't think they block it either.

But when I was looking for isp-independent email it was the PC web site I found out about this problem - in particular they say Tiscali block it for independent SMTP. They have an alternative port. Just one change in OE outgoing setup, don't know about Outlook. Before choosing PC I asked Namesco and 1&1 about this, they both confirmed they also have alternatives.

Unless you have some other reason that is none of my business, it is that easy
