As John2007 says, get your email away from your ISP. At Purple Cloud you register your own domain for

Thanks but whats the advantage of own em address - how do I check what co.uk addresses available? Thanks again
|
|
|
The main advantage is the separation of functions. E-mail, like free web-space, is used by some ISPs to help tie in customers to that ISP. When the ISP becomes ropey users are reluctant to move because they have to change e-mail address, web-site host etc. as well as ISP.
There are many sites you can use to check and register a domain. Try www.godaddy.com.

When you want get a domain, you can have any name for it you like, as long as it is not already taken. Most decent .co.uk domains are taken, much more choice if you try a .me.uk one.

Does a personalised name work with Outlook Express? What servers etc should be used?

Yes, you configure the POP3 and SMTP servers to that of the provider - if you used Purple Cloud it would be: -
mail-dublin.purplecloud.com
smtp-dublin.purplecloud.com
[Or whatever server they offer]
Tick the authentication box and away you go - you are then divorced from any ISP for an email address.

Thanks - who would you recommend as an ISP if I went for my own domain name? Also, can multiple accounts be created ie one for me, the wife, kids etc?
Thanks again

NPA, just to be clear here - your ISP and email provider are different, so when you ask: -
Thanks - who would you recommend as an ISP if I went for my own domain name? Also, can multiple accounts be created ie one for me, the wife, kids etc?
I assume you mean, which email provider would offer the above? Because if not, you are again tied to your ISP. To summarise: your ISP will give you the ability to get internet access, but your email provider will give you email access when you are on the internet - sorry if this sounds complicated, but it's really very simple.
Use Purple Cloud if you so wish, as they will offer your domain name and the email package.
If you need any further unravelling, feel free to PM me and we can chat off board.

I think most of your questions have been answered in this thread, but Purple Cloud are one of many; 1&1 plus others - do a search for UK email providers and many come up.
NewNet are a very good ISP; one of the few remaining in my opinion.

Ps. Assuming this is a genuine post, you shouldn't publicly disclose your email address

Too late when you posted this, the limit is 12 hours. Thought of suggesting the same earlier, but someone had already pointed out he shouldn't have posted it - though I suppose he didn't realise he could edit it out . Google or a trawler probably already had it anyway.
Though I suppose he could pm seb to remove it even now.
Isn't the Internet a nice friendly place.

"are Purple Cloud the best domain company". They don't seem to be sharks, some of the others scare me. They all actually register through the UK registration authority Nominet anyway, but if you try to go to Nominet direct it costs

I found this thread very interesting. I would like to have a third party email account ahead of ditching Orange once my contract is up, but I don't wont to shell out on a domain etc and then find that there are problems receiving some emails using my Mozilla Thunderbird email application.
The reason I am a bit hesitant, is that as a test, I have been experimenting with Google mail.
With Thunderbird, I can receive test emails sent using my Orange address to my Google mail address, and vice versa, but test emails sent from my Google mail address to my Google mail address aren't delivered back to my Thunderbird inbox. 'Get mail' shows 'no new messages on the server' - even though, if I log on to my Google mail account it appears in the intray.
I could just pick up emails from the host server, but with Thunderbird, it is very handy having everything (emails, mail filters, RSS feeds, newsgroups) in one place. Does having a 3rd party email provider mean loosing this convenience? - or is the above problem specific to Google - one that could be tweaked?
Very grateful for any comments on this.

I use Thunderbird with gmail (as well as my own domain mail server) and can send and receive without problems. I suspect one of your settings may be wrong.
|
|
|
As john2007 says, your issue will be with Thunderbird setting as leased domains with a decent provider offer full POP3 and SMTP capability which Thunderbird is fully conversant with.
Go on, give it a go

No it doesn't. I have several domains. One has emails forwarded to my Gmail account and picked up from there by Thunderbird, the other just has Thunderbird picking up the emails direct from the host server.
