Newnet

I recently posted a query in relation to reliable alternatives to AOL, when my contract runs out in September. I was delighted with the help I received and have done some research into all of the suggestions. It seems to me that the one most suited to my needs would be Newnet. In a test call at 18:00 approx, they answered within 2 minutes, and were patient enough to listen to my ramblings and questions, providing answers that were clearer than the questions.
Before I make the move, I thought it would be prudent to ask if anyone has heard of any problems with Newnet, of which I should be aware?
In addition, close contenders were IDnet, ADSL24 and TitanADSL. I liked the idea that the latter two were Entanet providers. However, they seemed a bit more expensive than Newnet, for the type of lower end use that I require.

I don't think NewNet can be bettered for my monthly usage of 3GB or less. If that is your usage I would recommend NewNet.

Obviously I am happy with them.

Changing the subject slightly to my hobby-horse. I like a decent email address, so a couple of months before I migrated I decided to get ISP-independent email with my own domain name. So I was able to let all my contacts know my new address well before migration, so pick up the few I missed still coming through to the old "ISP" one. Then when I migrated I had to do absolutely nothing about my email - instead of a panic after the migration happened to tell everybody, and certainly lose some.

If I migrate again, no change to email.

When I phoned Newnet to discuss possible migration, they were suggesting that I should use a max service of 2-8 Mbs. I am currently on AOL 2 mbs but getting routinely about 800-900. However someone suggested to me that I might have trouble with a max service because of my noise level. What do you think? I am laothe to embark upon anything that will cause me trouble, but at the same time I would be migrating to Newnet because I believe them to be a good provider, and therefore it would be foolhardy to ignore their advice. Any comments from anyone?
Is there anything that I can do or get to increase my speed for what is a very poor line. My exchange is cleveleys and my router is a netgear DG834G if that helps.
Also, is there any way I can preserve all the answers to my postings on this site for future reference?

I'd be tempted to stay on a fixed 1Mbps link with those stats.

Do you get the same stats when you are plugged into the test socket?

I think posts are kept for 3 months or so. You are probably better off cutting and pasting anything you want to keep.

You are not on AOL 2Mbps, you are on 1Mbps. (1Mb fixed syncs at 1152, 2Mb fixed syncs at 2272).

I don't like the -ve download SNRM, (the large number is actualy a negative). Can you try some time before 9am, and a few more through the day to give us a pattern.

With that attenuation I think I would agree with Newnet not John, but it very much depends on what your SNRM does over 24 hours. I wouldn't expect to get more than about 3000 sync though.

Posts are available in the forums for at least 6 months. For future posts, in "My Home" in the "Subscribe" line you can set it to email to you any replies to your postings. Whether that includes all replies to your threads I doubt, and of course no use for existing posts.

Incidentally, thanks for the advice re domain name. I set one up about a month ago with 1and 1 in anticipation of the forthcoming move. It sounds a bit more expensive than yours, in that it cost me 13.00 approx, but that includes one year email hosting but two years name 'rental'. I am really pleased with it so far, and will be more so when I transfer all my contacts over manually from AOL!

I know that it is not strictly ADSL, but do you know how I can get my Logitech cordless keyboard to give me the pound sign, and also the @ sign will only appear when I press the double inverted commas, above the 2.

Further, is there an advantage to using Firefox over IE? I have it on my Dell computer but have never used it.

Looks like you have the keyboard set to English(US) instead of English(UK). If that is not the case, ask me again - there is a way by holding down the ALT key and typing 3 numbers on the numeric key pad then release the ALT. But it is so long since I had to do that I have forgotten the numbers and don't know where my list is - but I can find it if needed.

Never tried Firefox - ask in the Windows or General Chatter forums I suggest. It seems to have many devotees.
