Best way to go about this?

Ok here is the mission, my mate is wanting to get a broad band package which is value for money so we did a search of packages available in the area etc. but there are problems, i have a AOL package and am in the same area, i can only get 1 mb but was told by these internet checks i could get 2 mb...

but when they did a check on my line, they said my house was too far from exchange etc. so how can we be sure that what the checks say he can get are acuarte, i had to tell AOL this when i saw i didnt get the 2mb which is bad in my books!.

is there a way we can check his line to find out exaclty what he can get?

Does he already have broadband?
If so, post his line stats.
If not, type his number into the checker at http://eco.btwholesale.com/broadband1/ and copy, verbatim, the response (leaving out his number, obviously).

Oh, and the problems you had with AOL....That's because AOL have a history of only providing what the BT estimator "thinks" you might get. Most ISPs do not, they just provide ADSLmax (the "upto" 8meg product), and let it connect as fast as it can.

That's the main reason why I left AOL last year as they refused to put me on to Max despite the BT estimator saying that I could get between 3.5 - 4 Mb on Max which is what I do actually get.

They said that my line could only support 1 Mb which is the case if we were talking about fixed speeds but I was talking about Max!

ok it says he can have a line rate of upto 2Mbps but says his line should be able to support a potential 4Mbps

When i do the check for me, it says i can have 2Mbps but the potebntial for greater than 2Mbps, the thing is i am with AOL platnium and get 512 to 1Mbps, is there anyway i can get AOL to get it higher?

It would probably be easier to migrate to an ISP that actually listens to their customers.
