New ISP

I've currently got my MAC code off BT and im looking for a new ISP. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any good ISP's for playing online games(PS3 to be precise) Ive heard of a few who don't like you playing games and will slow down the connection. I was looking at Virgin Media(non cable one) i can get that for a

Have you any idea how much data you transfer per month?

roughly between 60 to 80gig,give or take a few gig

Have a look at the Entanet resellers (e.g. ADSL24, UKFSN etc.) to see if you could live with their peak/off-peak structure. They offer monthly contracts.

Virgin Media ADSL can be very hit and miss and I think you have to take a 12 month minimum contract.

As you mention gaming I would avoid the following as they generally give you a very slow gaming connection and slow erratic download speeds while having generally next to useless customer support that blindly follows scripts :-

Tiscali
Virgin

I would pay a little bit more and get a decent connection as saving a few pounds a month is pointless if you can use it for what you want.

Thanks mate, your help is appreciated. Im going to go with Swift Internet, they seem a good company also ive tried to search google for any feedback on them,but cant find any. Which can be either good or a bad thing, im going with with the good option.At least they dont have a website created just for their problems, as Orange does.

This doesn't look good on their web site.

There are a couple of things which would put me off:

1. 12 month minimum contract
2. 300Mbps backbone (37.5 customers @ 8Mbps would fully use the capacity).

cheers john for the feedback. Out of all the Entanet ISPs, which one would you choose?

I've never considered Entanet seriously as they don't have a package suited to my very light usage.

They are all selling the same underlying package with slight variations in the add-ons. I suspect they are all equally good. Personally I'd pick one at random and if I saw no adverse comments in the Entanet forum I'd go with that random choice.

Re Swift, forgive me for not finding them after going through the first 7 pages of my Live Search results . That might say something about them.

If fact, just as worrying as John's highlight of the 300Mb backbone, (very strange number), the rest of the web site is seriously out of date or wierd.

NT Server?
ADSL Max upload 512kbps? Premium 800kbps?
Contention ratios 50:1 & 20:1 - Max does not have contention ratios! (Actually if you hover over the "Contention ratio" line heading on the ADSL product page the pop-up has some interesting arithmetic. Concludes that contention is rarely a problem - but 68 full speed users out of 3400 (2%) would max it out. Hard luck on the 3332. And that's with no-one faster than 512kbps. How about 10 users at 3400kbps?).
