512K Line

[link to this post]

My line is only capable according to various sites checkers of 512K. I was on Pipex solo 1000 which was a 1MB fixed service and had no problems. It was changed to ADSL MAX and I have had an intermittant but mostly poor latency and slow downloads since. What is my best option and I have a few LLU options including Sky and Be but not sure what to go for.

Can you post your stats?

I can do that tonight when I get home. I've tried all the stuff on sockets and another router but problem only started when I went to ADSL Max and they won't put me back to fixed as they no longer sell fixed speed. I noticed when I changed service it started a new 12 month contract but the service has not worked so should be able to switch?

Which provider are you using? Cheap as chips usually means congested pipes. If you post your stats then we can advise what speed the line can handle.

Those stats can possibly give you a speed of 6Mbps with an LLU provider such as Sky or Be.

With IPStream providers you will get a max of 2Mbps .

Given that you are on a Max ADSL product you are not going to get more than 1 Mbps unless you can improve your line. Some routers mistakenly swap some downstream/upstream stats, I wouldn't be surprised if your downstream attenuation is more than 63 dB (the maximum reported).

Could you plug your router into the BT test socket and see if your stats change?

If they do there may be scope to improve your internal wiring.

Something wrong with the stats.....upstream attenuation much higher than downstream?
I suspect the router has them confused.
In which case, he'll be lucky to get much more than 1-2Mbps with IPstream or LLU.

I used to get 900kbits download speed tests on 1MB fixed speed, now only getting 217kbits on new 3MB downstream sync with same equipment.
