Pipex/Tiscali Replacement?

[link to this post]

Hi,
So, with Pipex going to s**t since the Tiscali buyout, and things only getting worse (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/28/tiscali_pipex_migrations/), we need to find a good replacement that can match Pipex's previous quality service (we've never had a single problem with Pipex in the four years we've been with them, until now).

We're currently on what was the Pipex Max 8Mb unlimited package (no longer offered by Tiscali), paying 24.99/month. We don't need any extras (phone calls etc.) or even a modem, just someone who can offer a similar package and excellent service for around the same price. We're not in an area with LLU, so it has to just be standard ADSL. Obviously needs to be someone who supports migrating.

Thanks for any advice,
Jack

You need to decide if you really need "true unlimited". It costs around 80 per month these days.

Have you any idea how much you actually use? Do you do a lot of p2p stuff, or iPlayer, downloads lots of music or videos? Many routers will give you the info.

The highest allowance you are going to get for a sensible price is from an Entanet reseller such as vivaciti, ADSL24, ukfsn. They can slow your speed down at busy times to 2Mbps, but if your sync speed is under 4Mbps you aren't going to notice that really. 19.99 for 30GB peak and 300GB off-peak. They also have higher packages.

Plusnet actually offer something with unlimited overnight I believe. Newnet also but above your budget.

Useful comparisons.

Hi RobertoS,
Thanks for your help. Well if I'm honest we probably don't need true unlimited, it's not like we're constantly downloading or anything. As far as usage goes I'd say it's pretty high, easily over 20 GB/month, maybe around 30. I've no idea on the exact stats, our router (Netgear DG834) doesn't have any info.

I see in your comparison IDNet score highly, although it's a 30GB limit, they seem very good. At our current usage 30GB would *probably* be enough (Home Max plan).

Just out of interest. I was on a fixed 2mbit with Pipex. Moved to Tiscali Max and syncing at 7mbit but only downloading at 2mbit. Is this normal for Pipex/Tiscali changover?

Im guessing they have capped my download speed to the same speed i was previously on

The first thing to say is you are being ripped off - I am on MAX unlimted and am being charged 14.95/month.
Secondly, I requested my MAC today as I cannot access newsgroup servers until after 10pm, and the throttling is an absolute joke. I checked and am now on Tiscali network without my knowledge.
All very annoying after a good number of years with Pipex. Fed all this back and they didn't even bother to try and retain me as a customer, and admitted loads were leaving.

How long ago did you move to Max? If it was over 10 days ago the BT speed test I linked you to will tell us your profile if you can get the proper version - try in the morning.

14.95/month!? [censored]. Been with them over 4 years, would have thought they'd let me know when the price comes down. Oh well. Yeah, since the Tiscali takeover the connections been getting worse and worse and the throttling renders the connection useless. Out of interest, who are you moving to?
