Which ISP? Help!

[link to this post]

I'm with Pipex (Tiscali, whatever they're calling themselves these days) at the moment but I want to migrate.

I already have my MAC code - just in the nick of time if any of these forum posts ring true :/

Any suggestions as to who I should migrate to ? All I really do is play online games so latency/ping and stability will be vital to me. I do no mind paying a bit more for my connection.

I've heard good things about plus-net for gamers ?

All feedback will be GREATLY appreciated !

Regards

Mark

If your usage is mainly gaming then you probably don't need huge data allowances so have a look at IDNet and Newnet. Both of them should provide stable connections with low pings, backed up by UK based support and 1 month contracts.
If you need more data allowances Entanet resellers would be worth considering; again pings are always low but download speeds can suffer a bit in the off peak period precisely because of the huge data allowances on offer.

Do you have an idea about budget? Also other than gaming, what else do you use your connection for? Do you do any downloading etc?

If Be* or O2 is available at your exchange, they're worth a look, but otherwise, the ISPs listed here are fine -- I can personally vouch for NewNet's reliability

What are the pings like for BE and O2?

It would be wise to actually check what ADSL services you can get first before parting with any cash.

LLU providers such as Sky and Be will give you the best speeds, biggest caps or no caps at all - no throttling - and at the lowest cost.

Most IPStream providers will have some form of traffic management imposed on your connection (i.e. throttling, capping, etc.)

Use the link I have put below and it will tell you exactly what ADSL services you can get by just putting in your post code or phone number (i.e. it may say "Sky LLU" or "Be LLU" - that means you can use Sky or Be and they are an LLU service).

Link to ADSL services checker.

Pings are fine -- both my housemates play Call of Duty 4 online endlessly and have no problems

BT Broadband should give you the best pings as they route directly to the internet over BT's monster backbone rather than bouncing via the isp.
