Is it worth going with LLU ADSL2+?

[link to this post]

Hi

I'm currently on a 1MBPs ADSL connection - my line seems to be long/poor quality, and can't even support 2MBPs on a normal ADSL connection. I'm very happy with the quality of service from my ISP, but am getting increasingly frustrated by the fact that I can't get a faster speed using a normal ADSL connection.

My question is, given the apparently poor quality of my line, is the increase in speed/bandwidth I may get from LLU ADSL2 worth the hassle of switching providers, going through the LLU process etc.? I'm not even certain ADSL2 will be much faster with a line like mine; estimates I've looked at seem very vague. If it helps to give an estimate, my modem reports my downstream attenutation as 49dB.

Thanks for the help.

49dB attenuation suggests 5 to 5.5Mbps may be possible on ADSL2+

49dB is not exceptionally long, speeds of 3 to 4Mbps or more are possible, if you are syncing at 1152kbps and have a downstream noise margin under 10dB then you need to seriously look into the extension wiring in your property.

To give a better comment best to give us the rest of your stats.
http://www2.farina1.com/adsl gives estimates for ADSL2+ and works off your ADSL stats

My SNR is 7.

I'm not sure what my line sync is or how to find it out. I should probably clarify that I'm on a fixed 1MBPs service, not a rate adaptive one, reason being that when I first signed up the estimates I could find said my line would only support 1MBPs anyway, so I thought I may as well save money on a fixed service.

Thanks again for the advice.

49dB attenuation and 7dB noise margin with a 1152Kbps sync - something is wrong.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/install.html#226 take a look, find the master socket and when you've removed the front try the phone in the test socket. Does the margin increase a lot?

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.html#235 is a cost free way of improving the available noise margin sometimes.

With the stats you have supplied, as Saffron says - you could get 5 to 5.5Mbps on ADSL2+ but that noise margin needs sorting.

Use the link I have put below and it will tell you exactly what ADSL services you can get by just putting in your post code or phone number (i.e. it may say "Sky LLU" or "Be LLU" - that means you can use Sky or Be and they are an LLU service).

Link to ADSL services checker.

Using ISPs such as Sky or Be will give you more bang for your bucks with best speeds, biggest caps or no caps at all - no throttling - and at the lowest cost.

Edit:Saffron has given you some ways to try and fix that noise margin.

Ok, I've just looked at my router again, and now it's saying that the noise margin is 13.

I don't know how to find the line sync, but it says that the downstream data rate is 4032 Kbps. Is that the same thing?
