yet another "Which ISP"

[link to this post]

Hi,
I am on BE Pro with 8 static IP addresses. As I am 5km away from the exchange and my line attn. is 44, I get funny speeds like 300kbps to 5mbits. And this is at off-peak
anyways, I am planning to change the ISP. and I was thinking of cable instead of adsl.As far as I know, distance to exchange doesn;t effect your speed with cable. And virgin media is offering 10Mbit Fibre optic with 5 static ip address.
Do you think it is smart move to switch to cable?

Thanks!
Bill

It depends how important speed is to you, compared to reliability and good customer service (for which Virgin are not so renowned).

Even with all of Virgin Media's problems, cable can't be much worse than ADSL over a 5km line, so the OP should have a go -- hopefully they still let you out of your contract if you're not satisfied within the first month?

Otherwise, Be* isn't good for long lines, and perhaps a fixed-rate product from another supplier (e.g. NewNet) would be the way to go

Be has 3 months cancellation period and you can downgrade at any time. So I will downgrade to their value package and then cancel it. mean time I will order virgin. As it is cable, they don't need to wait for be to release the line.

How long have you been with Be? The Value package is initial 12-month contract, then becomes one-month. I would expect that a downgrade to it would trigger a new 12 month term, but just guessing. Maybe if you have been there over 12 months you would be ok.

Oh, I am only with be for 1 week!
So will just cancel it and pay the 3 months cancellation fee.

Actually, now that I look properly at your OP, I realise that your attenuation isn't that high, and you should be getting decent speeds -- seems more like your phone line itself could be wonky. Do you get crackling on the voice line? Have you plugged the BeBox into the test socket to see if you get better performance?

I would give Be another week to settle down as it plays around with your line for the first 2 weeks to get the best settings for you.

Also go and browse the Virgin Media forum. Just looking at the first few Subject Headings doesn't look like a happy bunch.

Well spotted. The OP is asking and we are all answering the wrong question.
