Your help needed - are UK Online any good?

[link to this post]

Hi everyone

I'm currently with Orange Broadband and have found their support to be less than helpful - therefore I'm thinking of changing my ISP.

I have looked on the website for UK Online and they seem pretty good - tech support 24/7, freephone number, UK based support, low contention ratios etc so I'm thinking of changing to them.

What have been your experiences with UK Online - are they any good? Is their support good (easy to understand - technical stuff, quick response, friendly)? Are they a reliable ISP, etc?

I'm really not very technically minded, (think "talking to a 5 year old" when explaining things to me!) so if you can bear that in mind in your responses that would be great.

thanks in advance

Presumably you have checked that you can get UKOnline?

Are you bothered about getting "up to 16Mbps" rather than "up to 8Mbps"? If you can post your line stats here, or just tell us the downstream sync speed, attenuation and Noise Margin (SNRM) we can tell you what speeds you should get close to with a decent ISP. If you don't know how to get those, look here or here.

If happy with "up to 8Mbps" then this comparison may interest you.

UKOnline are the only ones of that providing up to 16Mbps. (If you have or want Sky TV then go for that instead - it's the same basic service and cheap! BUT - Avoid Sky Connect!!!). Otherwise if you just do a bit of browsing and email, Internet shopping, banking etc. I recommend Newnet - cheaper on low usage than IDNet and nearly as good.

If you do a lot of heavy downloading then an Entanet reseller such as ADSL24, ukfsn or vivaciti is a good choice at 19.99 per month, though their speeds can slow to 2Mbps at heavy-use times.

If your main usage is gaming, it is worth looking at Plusnet - they have a package targeted at gaming I think.

Bob - Newnet Lite, ex Prodigynet. Purple Cloud for domain reg and email and web space.
