The ISP hunt of 2008.... IS ON!!!!

[link to this post]

OK, Got out of the Pipex Contract via writing a very good email. But, obviously, I need an ISP.

Here's what you folks may need to know to give me some advice...

Router is a ZOOM x6...
SNR Margin 14.5db (Router moved to Master Socket, running test socket. Networked PC upstairs.)
Line attenuation 41.0db
FEC Errors galore.

Exchange details..
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=SLGY

We Download alsorts of rubbish, emails galore, we browse A LOT, and of course, evening online gaming.

Obviously, LLU appears the way to go, but Talk Talk doesn't appeal. What do you experts think?

Thanks in advance.

i'm not one of the experts, but snr of 14.5 looks odd!
llu isn't a sensible option for you, you have the same choices as me.
how much (approximately, Gb/month) do you download?

Have alook at IDNEt. Highly regarded in all circles and one of the best around.

Well, the SNR was about 7 - 11.5db in it's old set up, but once the Modem was moved and I networked the house, the master socket face removed, the SNR went up slowly, after a bit complain to Pipex.

They apparently passed the issue's to BT as a line issue.

See there for the issue's i've had.

As for how much I use, anywhere from 5GB to 30GB i'd guess at. But that's just a guess.

In reply to:

Perhaps the OP is on a fixed speed product rather than ADSL Max?

Edit:-
Not fixed speed, as just had a look at the OP's profile and the connection is "8Mb (yeah right)"

Alastair.
madasafish
not MAX ......

Could you give all your stats? i.e. downstream/upstream attenuation/margin/sync rate.

Do you know who has unbundled your exchange?

Downstream is viable, upstream sits happyish at 448kbps.

Down is currently at 4768kbps, but it'll alter after a reset, and again, and again...

wow, you've had fun! on the bright side, a decent isp should make sure it gets sorted! general consensus seems to be if your usage is light, or your wallet fat, idnet is a good choice, if usage is high then entanet (vivaciti, adsl24 etc) are a good bet, both offer great support!)

Well, the experience since Sept has been 99.9% bad. Sick to death of it.

Last night, was that bad, was on the laptop and THREE mobile internet dongle. No issue's!

Entanet resellers look good to me, 20 a month is spot on in my eye's.

IDNET, over priced compared I think, much less GB for your bucks, but great reviews lol.

You have a high downstream SNR Margin of 14 dB. If you had the normal target SNR Margin value of 6dB you should be getting syncs in the region of 7300 Kbps (equating to data downloads of about 5000 Kbps). On ADSL2+ you might get syncs of 10000 Kbps (equating to data downloads of about 8000 Kbps).

It might be worth investigating why you have such a high SNR Margin. You obviously have a noisy line (witness the number of errors even at the high margin).

Have you tried changing all your filters and removed the ring wire as shown here?
